Cool Factory # match or custom


So if been told that number matching factory resto for these 67-72 Chevy trucks ain't very desirable people would would rather have custom built ...

So what do you prefer reply with answer

To each their own ,Some guys dig original, some totally custom . Once you trashed your frame you no longer have a numbers matching anything just some cool parts left to build a custom non numbers matching truck .

numbers matching includes

engine /trans/rear/original body/AND FRAME

I don't know if desirable is the word I'd use. There is no way to number match the engines transmissions, etc. to a particular truck like you can with the Mopar Muscle Cars where the last 6 of the serial number is tamped into the block and trans, and I believe rear end that came with the car. Because of that factor number match is not an issue with these trucks. Now when you talk Custom you are talking about personal taste and that can be anything to a chopped top or a real wild paint job or crushed velvet upholstery When you customize a truck just remember if/when you want to sell it someone is not usually willing to pay a premium for your taste.

Yeah ... You correct for someone not paying for an individual taste so my thoughts where that factory type resto would appeal to the highest payer because ( my thoughts) there's more custom trucks than factory style so the factory resto would be worth more ... But if what you said is true about numbers (not saying your wrong because I certainly have no idea ) then I guess I can't be done unless the paper work proves it through documents dating back to original sale date ... Was wanting to get into restoring these trucks for a hobby/ business (cause my condition prevents me from being able to work a normal job an I'm tired of being broke lol )

I find the original ( although they are getting harder to find ) trucks bring the premium dollars but sellers of theses trucks usually know what they have you have to pay the price if you want one. Making a living flipping these trucks would be hard to do.

Numbers matching means nothing on these trucks since it can't be proven. Build a nice rust free truck that looks original if you want the most resale value.

If you want to make money on these trucks you need to know them in & out & be a very good body man lol The drivetrain #'s can't be matched to the vehicle itself, only period correct for these trucks. BUT correct VIN's & Titles matching the build do matter. So since you're build a 4x4 out of a 2wd truck it may not be worth as much as a true 4x4. There are thousands of resto mod trucks, custom trucks and original trucks out there so no the value isn't increased on them because there's less of either style. The value increases on these come from low mileage original unmolested trucks or high quality resto/custom builds. The quality of work, rarity and location can all impact the price of these. Here in the PNW our market isn't as strong as say Texas or the rusty eastern States. Since we have so many trucks here the prices are fairly low compared to other States.

Lots of cheap trucks but you need to know these trucks and what to look for if you want to make the most money. Lots of guys jump on the band wagon thinking they can wheel and deal these but usually make no money or can take a loss on stuff they thought was a gold mine but isn't. Same with all makes and models of classics though. I've only been buying/selling/building pre-72 GM trucks for 16 years now and that's nothing compared to some guys on here who've done it for 30+ years and is their livelyhood. Takes time to know the classics.

Good choices would include electrician, gas fitter, automotive mechanic....something along those lines.
Don't fall into the general skilled labor or jack of all trades category....that is not a desireable situation to be in.
Get licensed....education is always the key...or at least 99.5% of the time.

The collector car guys dis any car with production numbers above 2,000. What does that tell you about a vehicle with over 400,000 built each year from 1967 to 1972? They aren't ever going to be 'rare' in your lifetime and the big money is on resto-mods not factory original trucks. Our collective problem here is most of us do not have the fab skills to build a resto-mod that will fetch much more than an original truck and that means it will sell for $0.10 on the dollar.....Now, if my name were Chip Foose I'd build nothing but restomods, sell 5 or six a year and retire in Hawaii but my name isn't Foose so here I sit......just another peckerwood living out in the desert with too many toys, not enough money, and eyes bigger than my bank account. BUT, it sure is a fun hobby and I really like big motors, wild paint and Air Coinditioning!

dont become an aircraft mechanic either. I would say thats my two bits.... but as an aircraft mechanic I rearly have two bits to rub together.

If I could do it all again I would get into the medical field. nursing or xray tech or what ever. education is key.

as for origonality vs custom.Origonal is more desireable and they are getting fewer and further between. Numbers matching is clearly verifiable and achievable. one only has to look at the corvette industry. origonal is good foundation for any thing. custom is expensive and some peoples taste leaves alot to be desired.

I like origonals.

But I agree with you, I like originals too.

Do you want to lose a lot of money or a LOT of money? Because that's what you'll do building either way. So build what you want or take the money to Vegas.

From that one that sold a couple of days ago custom will bring more I guess, but you still spend $100K to get $40K back best case.

BINGO!!!!!!!

The only way you make money on one of these trucks is in small increments at best, and with trucks that most likely aren't restored. You can purchase a $2500 truck and flip it for 3k possibly.

As stated several times on this board, there are 0, that's zero numbers matching 67-72 GM pickups in existence. The block can be traced to a date that precedes the trucks' manufacture date, and that is the closest you can get. There were no VIN numbers stamped to the block, transmission, rear end, carburetor, or other components. Obviously the SPID can be matched to the door VIN and frame as well.

Witch do you like better
Option 1 all factory matching spid like the day it was made
Option 2 completely custom that doesn't match spid at all

.... Guess there's no money in any thing these days
Maybe classic Avon trailer restoration (if any even knows what that is lol)

I'm sure you meant to include this, but you can of course get it down to the exact model year AND in a truck AND with the transmission that matches based on the 6-digit code. So the closest you can get is:

- It came in that year of truck
- It came with the transmission option listed on the SPID
- It was built within a reasonable time window before the truck was
