Steering wheel install. Please help!

I'm reinstalling my steering wheel and it's taking a lot for the nut to get tight. I'm using an impact and its compressing the spring on the outside of the column really tight. Is that right? I don't remember the spring being that compressed before. The steering wheel felt loose till I got it to this point. Your help is appreciated. Last thing I need is for my wheel to fall off driving down the street!

should not need an impact. not sure what you mean by it's not getting tight(?) if it's compressing that spring there has to be some resistance, yes? more info pls and maybe we can help.

The steering wheel feels like it should now that I've used the impact. My question is should that spring be compressed as much as it has? Is that normal? how much do you normally have to tighten the steering wheel nut?

It just feels like it's gonna keep on tightening until the spring is fully compressed.

That nut just tightens the steering wheel hub done onto the splined shaft, the nut should eventually snug the wheel hub onto the shaft, you shouldn't have too worry about that spring being compressed, just make sure it tightens down and wheel hub is tightened down on to top part of splined shaft.

One more thing. I don't have the steering shaft installed to the steering box yet. So it keeps compressing the spring because it has nothing giving it resistance. Should have I installed it to the steering box first?
