Question 56 Chevy Door Problem

Hi. I was wondering if anyone can help me out.. I had to purchase 2 new doors and new vent windows for my 56 chevy and I am in the process of trying to install them.. my problem is that the vent glass does not fit correctly.. it seems to have way too much of a gap all the way around.. can someone help me out and tell me how much of an opening I should have between the outer and inner shell? is there supposed to be a seal from the vent glass to the shell? the vent glass is a brand new complete piece.. thank you in advance..

Re: 56 Chevy Door Problem

there should be a rubber or butyl seal in the frame that the glass slides into
the rubber is about 1'' wide and flat, the glass forms the rubber into the frame
the seal is trimmed after installation

It wasn't til _Ogre posted that I understood the original post. I was focused on "Door problem".

To help _Ogre's explanation I have pics.

I ordered the fitting tape from both LMC and Classic parts, I didn't like either one, they seemed to thick to me.

E-bay had a size I could work with and got the project done.

Re: 56 Chevy Door Problem

Thank you very much for your help.

Stepside Jim.. is there another seal that goes between the vent assembly in your pic and the door frame itself? my door frame does not have any screw holes that the vent assembly screws into..

sorry I do not have any pics to help..

Re: 56 Chevy Door Problem

Hmmm, no other seals to install. The outermost rubber you see on my vent window frame in the picture above is the only seal between the vent window frame and the door itself.

The two small brackets (including two others not seen in the picture) coming off the vent window frame are what the mounting screws go through to attach the vent window frame to the door.

The rubber on the vent window frame above gets sandwiched between the door and the vent window frame once you tighten the screws that hold the vent window frame to the door.

I searched through my pictures but none showed any details of this specific area.

Hope this helps, Jim

thank you.. when I tried to install the vent glass on the door I did not see any where I can screw the vent glass to? the door is brand new.. also the gap of the outer shell to the inner shell is big, and the vent glass has so much room on the channel that it does not seem right..
I will try and take pics of it this weekend and post them..
thank you again..

Re: 56 Chevy Door Problem

Here is the page from the manual shows where the mounting screw holes should be:

http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com...55ctsm0108.htm

May have to assemble and disassemble a few times to get all the holes marked and laid out before doing any drilling.

Or find a member close by or at a car show and make a template using key landmarks for reference.

Also, I used a bike inner tube for the vent glass to frame mounting fit real snug as the glass setting tape was too thick and didn't want to wait and order something else that may or may not work.

Re: 56 Chevy Door Problem

I assume you don't have any old doors for reference , you will also need some window channel , felt to line the window side of the vent window frame and a lower window seal.

#5,#7,#8 on lmc site (pretty good for diagrams)

https://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/ca/full.aspx?Page=19

I would recommend using Soft Seal or another brand beside LMC . The vent window rubber I bought from LMC is falling apart after 2 years , rubber is soft but splitting and has cracks deteriorating plain trash, I also bought rubber for the windshield and rear window , I WILL NOT put that on after seeing the vent window rubber fall apart.
