Absolute favorite part of old trucks.....

I've been in the process of cleaning out and selling a few things and I put my 83 k20 down by the road with a forsale sign. Today I remembered exactly why I love old pickups. It's not only the feeling you get when you drive them, or that memory that gets brought up by one, or even the constant curiosity of wanting to know the story of each truck. It's the people you meet with the hobby. It's the stories the people tell you. Whether you realize it at the moment or not, it's the small insignificant times like getting gas, selling a truck, going to the store real quick that you'll meet the people that impact you the most, later on that becomes "your story".........

I just love old cars and trucks and think I have to try to save them all. I also like meeting like minded people that have stories to tell about them.

The warm, rounded body lines, unlike the 73's and up that to me look like a box. The fact there very simplistic to work on,don't need a code reader or some kind of expensive scanner to tell you whats wrong with it, and no Wifi so nobody can hack it and steal it.

Re: Absolute favorite part of old trucks.....

It's funny I was thinking this the other day, a gentleman I was buying used parts off of asked me why don't you just buy all new? I had to explain to him it's not the same there's no personal interaction and you lose the meaning of car building and the hobby in general I ended up selling him 150$ worth of parts after I bought 30$ worth of parts off of him. It's a community and we are all kind of out there to help each other, or atleast we should be. It part of what being in a hobby is about. It's not so much the cost or the work is the fun and smiles you get to share. And can't forget the beer!

Re: Absolute favorite part of old trucks.....

I remember 25 years or so back a friend was here, took a look at the 6-8 trucks (all at least drivers/mostly nice rarer trucks) I had and said, "You know, if you sold all these trucks you could buy one really nice new one". I replied, "I know I could, and have money to spare. But, then I'd just have a new truck"

Like Flashed said, My favorite part is the "feeling I get that I am saving this trucks (or car's) life.
I hunted it down, captured it, broke it down, and repaired it. Put it back on the road where it was meant to be.
Now if I could only live about another 150 years I would get to all of them that I someday want to rescue.

Re: Absolute favorite part of old trucks.....

I really hate working on cars. I have back problems and problems with both wrists. So you might think I'm crazy for getting one of these trucks

But the fact is, I love the relative simplicity of the older cars, and the lack of sensors and computers. And I love the look. The first time I took note of one of these 67-72 GMC/Chevy trucks was when I was a teen in 1988 and saw one of these that an older friend in church had. I thought it was really cool and I've wanted one ever since. Finally got one 2 weeks ago

My favorite thing about my "new" 69 is I can walk up to it, and even with my T. Rex arms, can reach over and pick something up halfway across the bed. Modern trucks are just "too tall".

Re: Absolute favorite part of old trucks.....

I love the feel of driving them. They all have little differences. I have quite a diverse selection with each a different experience. Some of them hold memories and some are now building memories. I love the classic looks and details old vehicles have to offer. I have a few newer vehicles but I do not see them like these are when they get old.

I was talking about this with someone the other day. Most modern cars will just NEVER be classics. Not like older cars were.

In 1987 I was looking into buying my first car. I was looking at classics: 1967-1970 Mustangs, 67-68 Camaro, 67-72 Chevy pickups.

Back then in 1987, those were only 15-20 year old cars. And yet, they were already classic and cool as hell! And now, 28 years later, they are even more respected and in demand.

So look at 15-20 year old cars now - that would be cars from 1995-2000. How many 'standard issue' cars from '95-2000 do we consider classics like that?? Not many, if any!

I love them because they have "soul". My 73 (sorry I know) shakes and kicks and feels like it wants to buck me out and go find chicks. A prius won't do that.

Re: Absolute favorite part of old trucks.....

Its the big gas gauge. Everytime I get in one of these the big gas gauge immediately brings back great memories. Or maybe its the door window height, perfect for laying your arm on while driving down the road. No wait....its the shape of the body panels....no......its the ease of working on them......no.....its the ......... OH HELL, its everything!!!!

Re: Absolute favorite part of old trucks.....

I'm also one for the camaraderie and friendships made along these trucks. In the past year I've made connections with local C10 guys that I never knew existed, strengthened friendships with my dad's friends since apparently no one my age drives these trucks (let alone build 3), and gained a lot of respect from older gentlemen at gas stations and other random stops.

It's about 50/50 for me ~ I was a young Farm Boy when these were new in 1967 , we'd roll by the Chevrolet Dealer occasionally when we went into Town to drop off milk or buy tractor parts and dream as NO FARMERS in Rural New England could possibly afford a new truck back then .

Best part is driving it ~ my old truck is my friend , always ready to go in style and comfort , faster than you'd think too even with it's old 250 i6 engine .

It's dead simple to fix , a good thing as I'm disabled but still a mechanic , I was born to it .

SWMBO and I enjoy traveling in it every where .

Re: Absolute favorite part of old trucks.....

Lots of reasons for me.

Just some...

It was my dad's.

I grew up in the truck.

It's cheap and easy to work on.

It's different.

It's fun to drive.

The bench seat was MADE FOR DATES.

Re: Absolute favorite part of old trucks.....

I like driving something a little different (especially being a 4 eyed GMC). It seems to draw attention from people. I seem to get asked all the time if I want to sell it. I have learned more about mechanic work with this beast (just trying to keep it running) than I ever have with any other vehicle I've ever owned.
