LS Swap...5.3 ECU to control 5.3/4l80 or, 6.0 ECU to control 5.3/ 4l80e...Thoughts?
I'm swapping a 5.3l/4l80e into a '72 C10. Currently I have the 2005 VIN "Z" L59 5.3l/Harness/Computer etc, which is built to control the 4l60e.
I plan to run a 4l80e here b/c boost will come into play. My question is, can you all chime in on which makes more sense? 1) Convert the 5.3l harness to control the 4l80e and also make the tune changes on the 5.3l ECU to run the 4l80e or....... 2) Get a 6.0 harness/ECU to run the 4l60e and then tune the 6.0 ECU to run the 5.3l motor? In way over my head...it's pretty fun! John [IMG][/IMG] |

Just mod the 5.3 Harness to run the 4l80E then have the ECU reflashed.

or pick up a stand alone trans harness. tci makes a good one- then you can mange your shift points and such.

Get a 0411 computer if you're 99-02 and an Express Van pcm or 4.3 truck pcm if you are 03-07. Get the harness for the motor and swap a few pins for the 80 and get it flashed. Define your trans settings. Piece of cake. If you have more questions shoot me a pm. I've done almost a dozen ls swaps.

I agree with bagd72 . It will work out best in the long run. Its only swapping a couple of wires to make the 80 work.

If you're going to boost it eventually, I'd recommend looking aftermarket.
I'm running Holley EFI, and the closed loop function saved my engine just last week. Boost reference line blew off the fitting and fuel pressure dropped. The Holley compensated and I never missed a beat. If I'd have "saved" money using a Factory PCM, I'd be replacing the engine right now. I know it's not cheap, but it's worth every cent IMO. The factory PCM is fine but it's cumbersome to tune and overly complex with all the factory tables.

I'll be staying stock harness for now, If I really decide to get fancy with the set up, it will probably a few iterations from now on this project.
It's a "work truck" and I just want to bang on it and learn from it. My real dream is a bagged out 67-72 Burban with a twin snail setup.....for the family and all!!! When I get there.....I'l start puking cash on it! Thanks for the input so far. Any board members doing great harness conversions/ECU Flashing? |
