Unusual Items?

I just bought a 72 Cheyenne Super, short wide. Unrestored and appears completely unmolested. All steel appears original. Only non-factory work that I can find is an older paint job and engine paint.

It has a couple of items on it that I have never seen and was looking for help in identifying.

On the frame in the engine compartment, next to the exhaust manifolds there appears to be some sort of heat shields.

On the back bumper are little rubber steps that look like they were made for this bumper. I have never seen them and they appear to be some sort of dealer installed option.

The question is when I restore the truck do I want to replace these items or leave them off.

my exhaust manifolds had the original heat shields on them and a pipe that went into the air cleaner( I am assuming for cold mornings) I guess it would be up to you to leave them on, since it is a Super Cheyenne I would , my was just a plain jane work truck and I put headers
Post a pic of the SPID see if they are listed as a dealer option

Mine has the heat shields too. Well, 1 of them at least. If you decide not to keep them, I could use the drivers side shield.

I've never seen the bumper step before....interesting.

I should have been more clear. Not the heat shields on the manifold, but there is a stamped piece of steel on both sides of the engine, sitting on top of the frame. The passenger side has a mount for the starter cable as well.

Those are actually designed to channel cooler air to the exhaust manifolds to keep them from cracking which must have been a problem, and I believe they are a 72 only thing. They are factory.

Deal. Like I said, it had one repaint, looks like it was a quick job, but looks okay, shines up nicely.

Im going to just drive it until next year. After that I dunno. Though its pretty much all original, it needs some work. Weather stripping, carpet, etc. But, its almost too nice for an LS motor as far as originality.

Driver's rocker needs replaced and some work done on the passenger. Other than that, its just cosmetic. You can see the emblems are faded, trim needs polished though it is all dent free etc.

Gorgeous truck. I like the period correct driving lights in the front. Is it a Wyoming truck? A black short fleet pretty original Super Cheyenne is rare bird and I am always curious to know how you found it. Was it on EBay, Craigslist, a friend of friend deal or...

thanks for the heads up. I have them on my very early 72. I figured they were for routing air or keeping the wire off the manifolds . there pupose "baffled" me.

never knew it was to cool off exuast manifolds. makes sense

I bought it in Wyoming though it was originally from North Carolina. After the original owner (who had it most of its life) it had a second owner for 1 to 4 years. I tracked him down and talked to him but he was quite difficult to understand (seemed older). From there it went to a couple of dealers probably trying to make a buck, then to Wyoming.

Being from NC I was concerned about rust so I spent a lot of time inspecting. It still has the original carpet backing (black tar paper looking stuff which I pulled up to inspect the floors) and black covering over the fuel tank. Original jack and jack crank were still in place. It has some baffling between front fender and door which I believe is correct for Cheyennes

The fog lights are Unity brand and it has a Unity spotlight. They appear to have been in place since 72 by their condition. When they put on the fog lights they used steel strap attached to existing frame holes so no extra holes put into the bumper.

The problem with the truck is that it is not perfect yet it is too original to restore.

I found some inspection forms in the owners manual and was able to track the milage up until 1990.

Thanks for the info on how you found the truck. The baffling between the the fender and door is unique to the Super Cheyenne trucks.
