68 Fenders

What aftermarket fenders are the best to use. I have Tri-Plus and they don't fit . Any suggestions. Anybody have a mint set of used ones.

As you have already hinted OEM are best. You can use 68 Chevy or 68-72 GMC.

Well I've tried the aftermarket Tri-Plus fenders I was just wondering out of all the aftermarket stuff which company makes the best fitting fenders.

I had a set of door and a set of front fenders come in the other day for a customers truck they are tri-plus the rh door the first fit was so far off I didn't even think I could use it the the lh door went on it was close so I tried the rh again and moved it around a bit now I have a pair of great fitting door. I also put on the front fenders they fit great. What is off on yours maybe we can figure it out. Have you Xed out the front with a tape to see that the front is sitting square ? That is gonna be key and also new core support and cab mounts are a must to get the gaps right at the back of the fenders.

Yea everything is new on this truck, core support, cab mounts, doors. The back gap with doors is off and when I put the hood on the hood is a good half inch too long up front. Could you please explain the X fix to me. Im not a professional body man so Im sure Im doing something wrong. Thanks.

He's talking about checking for rack, or out of square. You want the cab sitting square on the frame. I have to say Tri-Plus are the best you're going to get in aftermarket. They are all stamped out the same length. I've used their whole front end before and didn't have the hood too long issue. Lots of trial and error with body fitment when you are coming from the frame-up

Greenie this will explain the hood problems to you, if your hood is aftermarket that is. I can't really tell if you are saying its a new hood or not.

There has been a industry wide problem with the 68 hoods but none I know of about the fenders. Where is yours off again? To X out a truck [any where] you take measurements across the front [say, since this is where the trouble is] take a reading from say the bolt hole on the triangle [piece on the core support that the fender mounts to] on the RF of the truck over to the drivers side front rear fender bolt. Record that reading then go to the opposite side and do the same. If those reading are different it means that the front is not square and the core support needs to move towards the shortest side HALF the amount the reading was off. Example the front right to left rear was 46 and the front left to right rear was 48 it means the support needs to move to the pass side inch then that would make both readings 47. See? Now if you have taken the cab off or if someone else is looking at this post and is wanting to check how there frame is start with cab mounts and X out the cab mounts to establish that that part is good then do the front and rear as well then that will tell you if the frame is even worth messing with. This method will help in determining why the sheet metal won't fit why the bed sits crooked why the front fenders and hood won't gap right. So lots of uses for the X out measurement. Jim

I have a set of 1968 Chevy fenders I'd be willing to sell you. They both need work, but I'd let them go very cheaply. Both have emblems.

That's really good advice Jim. Having done body work in a shop in the past this principle of measurement is essential to having any sheetmetal, oe or aftermarket, line up.
