'62 305 v6 5.0l
Hey guys,
this might be a dumb question but i have an immense amount of grease and oil buildup on my engine. ive scoured the internet high and low and cant find where my oil filter canister is located in this engine. im trying to give her an oil change and have the new canister. i thought it would be on the drivers side just next to the distributor but im not seeing it. any help or pics would be greatly appreciated! Also, my truck has an alternator from an 80's chevy. im looking to go back to an original generator for it instead. any pros/cons to doing this?

the oil filter canister is on the driver side bottom rear by the bell housing and it is big you can't miss it.

STAY with the alternator FAR superior to any generator (There are reasons they dont use them anymore)

Yep, stay with the alternator. Oil filter is on the driver's side near the bottom by the bell housing...go under the truck and you'll see it in an instance. lol Unless its gone somehow.

i dont know what the hell is wrong with me, if im blind or my truck is so coated in grease i cant find the oil filter canister. i got underneath the truck to try and find it but came out with nothing. does anyone have any pictures or videos on where the heck this thing is? i thought i found it behind one of the valve covers but that can type canister had a long spout coming out from it that went straight down. any idea what that is? uploaded a few pics of what im working with. the replacement given to me from oreilly auto seems to be about as big as the larger part of the starter.

The pipe in the picture is a crankcase breather or road draft tube,If I remember right some early v6s did not have oil filters,it should be next to oil pan near bellhouseing {dark area in above picture} or a big can remotely located somewhere??

so theres a possibility i just drain the oil pan and refill through the valve covers? no oil filter at all in the truck? that would sound about right since theres nothing the size of the starter around the oil pan or bellhousing

The canister for the oil filter will have a long 5/8ths bolt that runs straight through the middle of the canister. I'm not sure but, in the first picture, it looks like there is some kind of adapter plate with a knob for a lack of better word. First picture, left hand side, towards the middle.
Edit:After looking at it again I think that's where the filter is supposed to go. I think you're missing the canister.

Mine is on the driver side of the engine by the oil pan. If I can figure out how to load a video, I'll post this one I just took.

Here is a canister oil filter housing location photo. Located on bottom left, this one is longer then the ones used in light duty trucks.

i definitely dont have a canister there like this one. the truck once was a dump bed, and all the hydraulics and other stuff was cut out. ill go get a picture of the tubing with flash now as thats where i originally thought the oil filter would be

so i went and jammed my phone camera up next to the pipe and theres definitely no oil filter canister but what seems to be an adapter on top? sorry for the crazy amount of oil and grease. i was planning on doing an oil change after everything else ive done then taking her to have the engine bay and undercarriage cleaned thoroughly. thanks again for the help

I recall reading about a member on the 6066GMC forum who also said he did not have an oil filter; just a block off plate. Yours is the first I've seen. Looks like you can also see the electrical plug for the oil pressure light.
You can add on the canister type or try to find the factory spin-on filter unit from later years, but those can be tough to come by.
