8 lug vs 6 lug vs 5tru lug
I have a 67 C10 that has been converted to 8 lug wheels front and rear. I believe 71 arms and spindles in the front with discs and a dana 60 in the rear that is NOT centered properly. two inch spacer on one side only.
I have been reading a number of threads about converting to five lug and also about converting to 8 lug. My tire guy said I would need to stay with a light truck tire rather an all season that may be better in the rain. My question is: what is the advantage of eight lug over 5 lug? Not planning on towing anything heavy or loading the box. Any advice would be great. ray

Re: 8 lug vs 6 lug vs 5tru lug
8 lug is all 3/4T and not 1/2 T, are you sure its not 6 lug? forgive my asking. I never heard of anyone converting running gear from 1/2T to 3/4T before but is it possible this was a build project and whomever built it just used parts he had laying around?
Ok enough of that, if your not going to do any serious hauling work (8 lug is for heavyer load ect) and it is indeed a C10 then yes i'd wanna convert it to a 5 or 6 lug if it was mine.

Concur with swamprat. Could you share your VIN and SPID with us? Would like to do some forensics!
TO add to the above: 3/4 ton always 8 lug 1/2 ton was 6 lug til 71, then it became 5 lug. Some folks like converting a 1/2 ton 6 lug to 1/2 ton 5 lug for wheel availability and disk swaps. Big question is this: what wheels do you want to run? If stock steelies, I stick with 6 lug config, butyouse 71+ K15/K10 wheels so they clear factory disk brake setups. If aftermarket, then all bets are off. But you're in a unique position, you can go wither direction, 5 or 6, for about the same cost. All up to you and desired wheel arrangement. Or, nothing wrong with staying 8 lug! |

Re: 8 lug vs 6 lug vs 5tru lug
Your signature says it's been in the family since new... who converted it an why?
Wheel choice is the biggest reason for 5 lug. There just aren't any great options out there for 8 lug wheels. If you're happy with the wheels you have now and have disc brakes... I'd just leave it and get that rear centered up!

Re: 8 lug vs 6 lug vs 5tru lug
Wayne, my uncle, converted it in 2000 to 8 lug 71 system to haul a fifth wheel. I think that was his reason. It originally came with 6 lug drums and now I have discs.
The Dana 60 in an open 3:42 rear but the spacer bugs me. The wheels are okay but the rears do not seem centered in the wheel openings. Too far forward? Would lowering the rear help that? Centering the rear is a matter of cutting the attachment brackets off and rewelding them? Then I would have spacers on each side? Or is there another alternative from another truck which would give me a posi for a reasonable cost? I am interested in a bit more traction as these tires break loose at any opportunity. so I guess I am leaning more to the five lug so I can put passenger car tires on. thank you for your advice Ray
