guys I've never been any good at car thieving. I wound up busting half the column apart in the last one I had to do this to. what is the easiest way to unlock the column so i can steer it . Is it possible to save it . I don't really care if I HAVE to bust it.
I have a dent puller and plenty of tools but i have to take them out into a field . I can take my generator if necessary.
I know the easiest way would be to hire a 12 year old from Philly and he could be in it in seconds.!
This is a 72 Chevelle I bought for parts and the guy lost the keys.

Im not trying to be smart or anything but wouldn't it be easier just to replace the ignition switch? I just replaced mine in about 30 minutes. I know there is something that locks the wheel but I don't know what. Mine used to lock but every since my uncle put a steering wheel on it hasn't locked. If you need to know how to do it Im sure we can help. Its a lot easier with the tools though and they aren't that much. I just bought a GM ignition and it was 18.95. Rented a steering wheel puller, bought a turn signal cam remover and an internal / external snapring pliers.

Its kinda easy.

I just reread this post and seen its a parts car. I would still try and save the column. The tools are nice to have if you ever need to do it agian and it wouldnt hurt the column.

Just pull the wires from the switch on the column, then jumper it so the lights come on, leave that jumper in there, then run another jumper to the starter. Or spend 30 minutes taking the column apart and throwing a new ignition switch into it.

that'd be great, except he didnt ask how to start it, he asked how to unlock it so he could steer it.

actually i appreciate the effort even though he didn't quite understand.

I already butchered the bejesus out of it .

next time REMIND ME THAT THE LOCKING PIN IS DEAD CENTER ON TOP and i don't have to carve half the column apart with hammer & chisel.
BTW- he called last night and said his son in FLORIDA found the keys and is sending them up

I was just going to say stick a flat head screw driver in the ignition and slam away with a sledge hammer, and presto! You can use the screwdriver to turn over the ignition

And no, Im not from philly.
