64 New Member

Hello new to the site. Recently purchased a 64 step side solid body and frame. Will replace the rockers and 12 inches of the floor both sides. Have an L98 TPI with complete harness out of a 90 corvette with the ZF 6 speed . I know everyone is dropping the LS in, What problems might I run into with the . Looking at COY or similar wheel, but concern about fender rub. What maximum backspace to get a 20X10" rear 285/40. :chevy

Welcome to the site. I would do the brakes before the wheels. That way if you go to disc you can check the back spacing before you order wheels. The disc conversion will widen the front.

Thanks for the insight. I was searching for disc conversion earlier trying to get the best price. Also any issue foreseen with the engine and trans combo, trans/engine mount etc.....Appreciate the feedback. Excellent site.

Welcome to the forum

Installing a L98 won't be much different than installing any other OBD I, EFI small block. The engine harness will need to be reworked as a standalone or simply purchase an aftermarket harness from someone like Painless Wiring, or Howell Performance. Hopefully they still make TPI harnesses. Then the ECM will need a custom chip burned. I would seriously consider upgrading the engine control to a more up to date, modern controller. Something easier to tune. You will need a EFI specific fuel system with possibly a new tank. I believe the ZF 6 speed will have a hydraulic clutch? If so, I make a booster bracket with a hydraulic clutch conversion for the '63-'66 trucks.

The bellhousing crossmember will need to be removed and a trans crossmember installed. A crossmember from a '63-'87 auto trans truck will work.

Upgrading to disc brakes can certainly be done with all factory parts. I figured that out 35 years ago. But when dropped spindles and springs are wanted as well as larger rotors and multi piston calipers, the aftermarket kits is where you should look. But be prepared to lighten your wallet a bit.

CaptainFab: I really appreciate the info. I have the original harness for the system and ECU. Snatched everything from the Vette.
