Headlight switch question

Can someone tell me what the colored wires belong to? I was looking and found diagrams but the patterns seem different. Any help is appreciated. Wanted to know what wire to run for the instrument lights. Thanks

That isn't the original switch if you are looking at a diagram from an original switch.

It does look like a later GM wiring plug on the back of the switch and from late 60/s early 70's almost every GM vehicle has the same color coding.
The good thing is that the majority of after market wiring kits use that same color coding.

Take a test light and ground the alligator clip end. Find the hot wire that dims the test light when you turn down the dimmer.

Power to dash lamps is usually supplied on a gray wire. Sometimes it's dark green.

Thanks 1project2many for the diagram. I have seen this on the net but my pattern is different. It appears that if you look at the wires in columns for a reference. Lets say the first up and down column has one in the top spot and three in the second column. I hope you're following along with me. There is a post in the top slot of column one on the diagram you supplied. Mine (hard to see in the small photo) has a top and bottom wire in the first column. The top slot is dark blue the bottom slot is black. I believe this was pre wired when I got it. Thinking the colors should be correct for a GM vehicle. I will post a larger image. Hope this helps make some sense.

That connnector has a lot more wires and stuff going on than most 70's early 70's switches and connnectors had. I don't know what they all go to but my guess is that your truck doesn't need several of those circuits.

Any idea of what the original donor was?

For your truck the needed circuits should be:
Headlights
tail lights
Park lights
Dash lights
dome light

Power in. Some have two or at least more than one power in

Pull the switch out and see if there's a part number on it. From there you can see what vehicle it goes to and find the diagram of that plug for that vehicle

Know what??? Just dawned on me that you've got a F*rd switch there. The locking tabs at the top and bottom are a dead giveaway but I missed it anyway. Sheesh... I must be losing it.

The connector in the picture below is upside down but if you look at it for a bit you'll see it matches. Wiring color may not match but position does. Wire colors don't even match in F*rd replacement harnesses.
