5" & 7" drop with 17" wheels picture help

Hoping for a little picture help here.

I'm looking to put 17x8 front wheels on my truck with 4 1/2 backspacing

17x9 with 5" backspacing in the rear

I have a 71 step side, so I was wondering if anyone has pics of 17" wheels on their ride with that drop? If you do, could you please list your tire sizes also?

Even is you don't have a step side and have that set up, I would appreciate those pictures too, because it will still show me how the tire height is in relationship to the opening and I can see how much it fills the wheel wells.

thanks in advance for any help

hopefully you get lots of pics, but if not, search 5-7 drop pics and you can cruise about 10 pages FULL of awesome trucks with that exact kit

Thanks for the advice, but I already tried that route. I've tried that search and "17" wheels and ended up spending multiple hours, only to find about three or four 67-72 trucks with 17" wheels and some sort of drop and from that there was only about 2 with tire sizes.

I even searched the 3-5 drop thread and that didn't really help either. Actually, now that I think of it, that was the thread where I found that previous info

The wheels were mounted on Hankooks P255/50R-17 on all four corners.

Thanks so much. Those look like they did a decent job of filling the wheel well, without having excessive sidewall height.

I am worried about needing to tall a tire, with the 17" wheel. I don't like to see a lot of sidewall. I'm ok with what is needed for fitment on cars, but not so much with trucks.

Re: 5" & 7" drop with 17" wheels picture help

I have that combo on my truck, a '69 short step. At least really close. 2 1/2" spindle and 2" spring in the front for 4 1/2" drop. Rear is a leaf spring flip from JDM using a '72 5 lug housing for a 7" drop.

Summit legend wheels in the front, 17x8 with 4 1/2" bs and 235 55 17 and 17x9 rear with 5" bs and 275 55 17. At least on my truck, that's the biggest tire that will fit.

I like your front sizing also. That looks like you fit plenty of tire in back

I like a staggered fitment too, but I personally like to keep my front & rear tires the same height. Are your rears taller, or is it just the shadowing?

Thanks so much!

Re: 5" & 7" drop with 17" wheels picture help

I wanted a little rake to the front and a tall tire in the rear. The front 23 55 17 are 27" tall and the rear 255 55 17 are 29". My opinion again, but this is a near ideal tire size for the trucks to fill up the wheel well and maximize driveability.

I have no rubbbing with this combo and usually no issues with frame in the rear. A big sharp hit at speed will contact the bumpstops on the frame. I cut the factory pads off the rear axle and the DJM kit came with new urethane pads with a single 1/4" bolt that you mounted to the frame over the axle housing. Any more drop in the rear would require a c-notch FWIW.

Shot from the rear 1/4:

That shot really shows how good everything fits.

I already notched my frame, so I don't have to worry about hitting. I'm not usually big on different height tires, but that picture might have changed my mind a bit. Again, thank you for the pictures. They really do help a lot

Re: 5" & 7" drop with 17" wheels picture help

Thanks.

You guys are giving me (and hopefully others) a great database for different tire options, when it comes time to pull the trigger.

I can say that I definitely feel confident in buying 17" wheels after seeing these pics. Now I've just got to look closely at the tire sizes and make up my mind. I hope to be buying the tires after the new year

You have any problems with rubbing in the rear, or you have room to spare?

It only rubs under hard cornering. Of course, since I autocross it and aggressively drive back roads, it's starting to blister the paint on the inner bedsides. lol A good sway bar and some chassis stiffening would fix most of that.

thanks for the info.

I can't believe how hard it is to find tires in these sizes. It almost forces you to go up to 18" diameter, but that definitely kills the "budget build" type of thing

Re: 5" & 7" drop with 17" wheels picture help

Here is mine with 4" drop in the front and 6" or so in the rear (did a leaf spring flip kit so the actual drop may be closer to 7").

255/60/17 in the front and 275/60/17 in the rear. The front tires are close to hitting the wheel well on the left side, but I'm dealing with a bent frame right now and I think that is contributing to that.
