where to put "x pipe"?

I currently have a 468bbc in my c10. I have had the exhaust ran 4 different ways and im still not happy with it. the trucks sounds great for short rides but after some time in it you kinda feel like your riding inside the muffler! in the spring im planning on driving the truck on a 500 mile trip and it will drive me nuts like it is now! so my question is, will it be ok for a x pipe to be just behind the cab (I don't have any room under the truck to fit the xpipe under the cab)? I currently have 2.5" pipe from header to 3 chambered flowmasters and then out under the rear bumper exiting through chevelle tips. im gonna give bassani mufflers a try this with a x pipe. would I be any better off to change tips? thoughts anyone? I will load video soon

Not based on experience but my research some time ago was just in front of the mufflers. It seemed to not matter how far in front or behind. Lots of folks also ended up doing either resonators upstream or shortish glass packs up stream in addition to the H pipe to quite things down without hindering performance.

Myself personally on my crew cab build, I'll be doing dual 2.5" exhaust with an H pipe just behind the cab before the mufflers and using the bigger dynomax turbo mufflers. I think it should be pretty mellow but with some good "pop" when I open it up! If it's got any drone whatsoever, I'll immediately add in some resonators upstream of the H pipe.

Since my truck is 4 wheel drive, i had to place the "X" closer to the rear axle. I wanted to keep the pipe tucked up high and the "X" away from the drive shaft. Here is what I did. It is pretty loud and the sound resonates under the truck since I don't have tail pipes...yet. But when cruising around town the tone is very tolerable.

I had a similar setup in my truck, 454, but with 3" exhaust. It was friggin loud with those flowmasters on it. I had been running Pypes exhaust systems on a couple other muscle cars here and liked their tone and mild exhaust notes and they quickly became my favorite system to use. Plus they are all stainless and priced reasonable.

So, I bought a pair of their Street Pros and removed those flowmasters from the truck. Instant gratification. The truck is now mellow at idle and cruise, with windows up you barely here the truck at 2800 rpms buzzing down the road. Open it up and it gets aggressive but not obnoxious. Absolutely no drone anywhere what so ever. I don't even run an H or X setup on it. Truck now gets compliments all the time on how good it sounds. I still may add an "H" pipe at some point in the future just for the added benefit of a small boost in power, but at this point, I don't need it to kill any sound problems.

I also like Dynomax mufflers as long as you stick with the superturbo line. If you get into their welded case mufflers, they start to get too aggressive for my liking.

I've had everything from Magnaflow, Flowmaster 2 chamber, 3 chamber, Force II transverse systems, Spintech, Hooker Aerochamber, SLP loudmouth and Dual/Dual, Mufflex, Dynomax, Pypes race pro and street pro....(never tried their violators because the race pros were already too loud for me)
My favorite to date are Pypes street pro systems/mufflers, and the Dynomax super turbo muffler setups. I now run Pypes systems on 5 different vehicles and run a Dynomax setup on my sons little 5.0 fox body.

Headers are always going to make more noise than manifolds, that's one of the tradeoffs. My 350 has a Hooker 2.25" full exhaust kit and then Thrush 17713/17715 Turbo Mufflers. Mine goes out the side just in front of the wheels. I'd probably go a little bigger if I had a bigblock, the exhaust was on the truck when I bought it. At freeway speed the flex fan makes significantly more noise than the exhaust, it makes some noise (not a ton) when you put your foot down though. As long as I'm being responsible I'd be very surprised if I got pulled over for noise.
