My 62 SWB AKA Plausible
So after months of posting my pics on facebook and following Bomp he caught wind and sent me a friend request and told me I should put one of these together.
So here it goes. I picked up my 62 SWB small window in June. I'm going to attempt to link from facebook so if the pictures don't work I'll try to fix manually. My goal for the truck is to perform the rust repair on the cab (tall order)...remove the "aftermarket" body lift and get it on the road. The first goal was to support the cab and remove it from the frame. Then we got to cutting out (some) of the rusty areas. The previous owner had an interesting method of patching the wholes. It typically involved tin and silicon. More to come. Last edited by rpone605; 11-25-2016 at 02:28 PM. Reason: Updating title |

Re: My 62 SWB (Bomp made me do it!)
The first major chunk of rust repair was done on the passenger side. Someone had already started working on the cab and had cut out the inner and outer rockers. Here's how the passenger side currently looks.
Then I started working on the driver side. It currently looks like this but with the upper floor support. The next big project on the cab is the rear of the back floor and wall. I was able to find a good donor piece for it. This required us to flip the cab over and support it by the cowl and the back so the roof wasn't on the ground. This pic is after we cut up the donor piece and put the replacement back wall skin on. |

Oh please let me know the pics are working so I don't keep posting and have to fix a bunch of image links.

I know why, I was at work and Facebook is blocked. Didn't put the two together until now. Nice project!

Re: My 62 SWB (Bomp made me do it!)
Thanks for the words.
One quick question/input requested. I'm currently using this welder http://www.harborfreight.com/welding...der-61849.html (on loan from a friend) for welding duty. While I know it's not the best welder in the world it has served it's purpose for the most part. The problem I am running into while welding the back panel is that it keeps blowing holes through the metal. From what the harbor freight site said it should be able to handle 18g. However the welder seems to be running too hot. I could probably get my hands on a nicer lincoln with argon. Would it make the welding that much better/easier? |

Re: My 62 SWB (Bomp made me do it!)
As much metal work as you are doing IMO would really prefer better welder with argon much cleaner welds. I started welding on my truck learn as you go method. The flux core tended to spatter more making a bigger mess for me to clean up.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Thanks for the feedback.

Re: My 62 SWB (Bomp made me do it!)
A better welder with more heat control will help with welding sheetmetal. Also check out MP&C's build http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=564201. He shows some great metal working techniques.

Re: My 62 SWB (Bomp made me do it!)
and welcome aboard… Glad you listened to Bomp...
I'm along for the ride and agree with the previous welder posts… I bought a used HF welder from a friend, it died, so I picked up a hobart with an argon bottle and have learned a lot along the way… This is a great site with great folks and I can see the pics... Along for the ride...

Re: My 62 SWB (Bomp made me do it!)
One quick update. It's been busy the last few days so not much got done.
I was able to borrow a different welder that's gas and it's much nicer to weld with. I did some more spot welding on the cab and I think it came out pretty good. I hope to get out there in the next day or so and do some grinding and try to get the back of the cab wrapped up this week. BTW this only took me about 20 minutes to do. With the other welder this would have taken me hours. |

Re: My 62 SWB (Bomp made me do it!)
Welcome and glad to see you started a thread.
One thing to remember is to prep the area thats needing to be welded. ie. clean metal til its shiny. Nothing wrong with taking it slow. -reduces warping- I read MP&C, and many others. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=564201 I admire your courage to jump right in and make it right. Re: My 62 SWB (Bomp made me do it!)
I typically try to hit the areas with a flap disk before I start and then start welding.

Re: My 62 SWB (Bomp made me do it!)
Just one update. I took the plunge and picked myself up a new welder.
Figure I would spend a little more and get something that would last and do everything I needed. |

Re: My 62 SWB (Bomp made me do it!)
Just one quick update. Been fighting the corner and ended up really unhappy with how it turned out. So I decided to start over with that section since it really didn't turn out the way I hoped.
I haven't tacked the new piece in yet. Still working on fit and finish but it's pretty close now. |
