350 with a 3 on the tree

I'm not going to say rare, but is this combo less common than a 350 with an automatic? It's a 69 with what the old fella says is original everything. The tires are originals still

I wouldn't say they are common, but i think GM made quite a few. I don't think alot of them survived once the columns got sloppy.

One that would be uncommon was a 72 cheyenne i had with a 402 and 3 on the tree.

Re: 350 with a 3 on the tree

I ditched my original three-on-the-tree for six-on-the-floor. Once the nostalgia wears off, it's not very exciting to drive. Good putt-putt truck (especially with a 3.07 rear) but never in much of a hurry. I got places to be (so went with a 4.56 rear too)

Mine was a 307 three on the tree. Now it's a 385 Stroker three on the tree with borg Warner overdrive. I wouldn't have it any other way. Love driving her

That sounds fun Steve.

I assume this won't be sloppy yet, low mileage farm truck. Hopefully all is good

I like the sounds of the three in the tree and overdrive, did you put the overdrive in or was it in when you got it.

Re: 350 with a 3 on the tree

I found a factory 67 c10 with the correct long shaft solenoid and bought it. It had a cracked ear so I used my old case and I completely went through the whole trans and rebuilt it. Absolute best addition I have done to my truck. At 65 I use to be 3000 Rpms. Now at 75 I run 2100 to 2200. With a 373 rear gear. I was honestly worried I would grenade it with my 450+ hp motor but it's held up great. I have pushed it some but no burn outs or hard launches. The old saginaws are tuff for sure

Agreed that I don't see that many combos like that. They may have been produced in the thousands years ago - but the 350/3 on the tree is not a combo that I see that often when going to shows.

Don't forget the pics ...

Re: 350 with a 3 on the tree

The 67-72 era was when automatic took the majority, but 3spds were still quite common and got to be a rare sight into the mid-80s. This Blazer was a 350/3spd/Dana20 when I bought it. I changed it to automatic, yellow is the donor. Wanted to do a car 4spd but back then Advance Adapters was baffled at this proposition, although they supplied adapters for the same swap in Jeeps.

Mt first truck was a '72 SWB Highlander 396/3spd. I also owned one of a pair of twin '68s ordered by two brothers...'68 SWB CST 396/3spd

Re: 350 with a 3 on the tree

Bought this one a few years back with 307, 3 on the tree, and 1,00 original miles. It also had the factory O'Drive in it. I was gonna sell Pinky and keep it cause it had A/C but after driving the 3 ott and it jamming in second gear at the most inopportune times i sold it. Kinda regret it now as I guess I could have had the column rebuilt, but we all have those stories.

Re: 350 with a 3 on the tree

thyose old 3 speeds are bullit proof. I,ve run one for close to 1 million miles with only 1 rear output seal change. If I might make a suggestion drain the lube and install 50 weight synthetic gear oil. boy what a difference especially in real cold and real hot weather. I use castroil syngear, same as semi trucks run.

Re: 350 with a 3 on the tree

Let's see my Dad's old 71 GMC 4x4 had a 350 mated to a 3spd, I owned a 72 Blazer 4x4 with a 307 with a 3 spd, and I owned a 1970 Burb 4x4 with 250 six with a 3 spd...I finally have a truck with a 4 spd...

Does the truck have a low or hi hump? I have had two, but one was 42 years ago and the other was about 25 years. As I recall they had low humps.

I also had a '69 CST Custom Camper K/10 350/3sp. The '71 SWB Custom Deluxe K/10 I had was a 307/3spd/NP 205

I TRIED synthetic one time in my saginaw. It was a very expensive redline brand. I will NEVER i Repeat NEEEEVVVVER run synthetic in a saginaw again. I put it in the trans and it started leaking everywhere after a few weaks. It does something to the old seals. This was the original saginaw not my saginaw now with OD. I have 90w gear oil in both cases with no leaks whats so ever after the rebuild!
