Question What glue for headliner?

My headliner is starting to come down(again) after I used "Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive For Carpet." I've used this stuff on all my sub boxes and other carpet jobs and it worked great but it only lasted for about 2 weeks on my headliner. What would be some really good stuff to use? I HATE the looks of my saging headliner. TIA, DK

We use 3M's spray adhesive and coat the roof and the head liner.
The adhesive is allowed to flash but not get too dry as positioning it gets to be a problem. Once the headliner is in place, we set a "tee" made of two by fours under it and tip it to hold the liner up firmly. We use a piece of plywood on top of the two by fours that presses against the headliner, (to cover the middle area of the headliner). We let it set for 24 hours before removing the two by fours.

If you make the two by fours the right length it is simple to get the setup to jam between the floor and the head liner so that it presses it upward, (you don't need a lot of pressure, just enough to keep the adhesive in contact with the roof). The seat is out when we do ours.

Good luck!

Thanx for the replies! I dont think I'll have to worry about making a "tee" to hold it up because its just the carpet coming off of the headliner board thing. I'll just remove the whole thing again and peel off the remaining carpet and spray it down with 3M stuff and let it dry over night then reinstall it the next day. If anyone was wondering, this headliner is in an '89 GMC, so I'm not sure how it differs from the older styles.
One last question, Where can I get 3M spray adhesive? Can I just pick it up at a local harware store or do auto parts stores carry it?
Thanx for all the help so far, DK

I did not realize that you were asking about a later model truck as I answered for the 67-72 styles. The later models are definitely different and I am not sure how to get the cloth to stay
up. The spray adhesive from 3M will work but getting the cloth to stay smooth might be a problem. 3M is available at most auto parts stores. I always use the higher strength version, but I am not sure if the lower strength would not work, also.

Good luck!

Yea, I should really start thinking before I type, lol. I appologize for not including the right info in the begining. I will try to pick up a can of the 3M spray in the next few days and see if that will work. Thanx again, DK

I was talking about later model headliners.... I've never done one in a 67-72 truck...

Take the headliner out and go to an apholstry shop to have it glued. I had one done with new material a few years back for around $50. I will bet that anybody who used the spray adhesive (even the 3M) will find that after a few hot days it will come loose. The industrial glue is about the only thing that will tolerate the hot temps that a vehicle interior gets to. For the headliner in 67-72 trucks go to a shop also, I have tried contact cement, did not last. I think I have seen an actual headliner adhesive by 3M or the weatherstrip adhesive may work.
