Leaving car in gear - burning smell and squeak
Hey quick question. My 64 c10 has no ebrake cable hooked up at the moment (on order) so I am leaving the car in gear when I park it. When I start her up again and try to move I encounter some resistance and get a squeaking noise and a burning smell. Something has to be activating somewhere...I haven't gotten under just yet but is this something with the tranny or braking system?
Thanks for guidance |

Re: Leaving car in gear - burning smell and squeak
I assume this is a manual trans? I always leave my manual trans cars and trucks in reverse when parked and I've never had any of these issues.

Yes - me too. I tried to push the car as well in neutral and it wouldn't roll. The weird part is when I drove away it was sqeaking and burning as if the parking brake was on....going to have to get under and see whats up.

Re: Leaving car in gear - burning smell and squeak
When was the last time you checked the oil level in the trans?

Re: Leaving car in gear - burning smell and squeak
If it wont roll in neutral then there is something broke. Could be a stuck brake, a bad bearing in the rear end or the trans is toast.

Re: Leaving car in gear - burning smell and squeak
Sounds like you have a seized/stuck brake. If it happens again, put truck in neutral and jack up and try to spin each wheel. That would identify your source.

Re: Leaving car in gear - burning smell and squeak
my wife was out shopping and she had a similar problem.
I went to get her and the car , it felt like the ebrake was on when I tried to move the car. she doesn't use the ebrake and it wasn't pressed down. after I managed to get it home . when I pulled the tight brake drum off . witch I had to adjust the brakes looser to get it off... the bonded brake lining had came loose from the brake shoe and it fell off when I got the drum off . the lining was binding up the rear brakes . I put some new brake shoes on and the problem was solved . it was a 94 buick roadmaster wagon .. |
