383 stroker swap

My 350 was getting tired, so I had to do something. Everyday was a race to see if she burnt or leaked more oil. Not sure what it did more of? So just like every other project on this forum, a little engine swap turned into a fix and replacement of a lot of other parts. but I fired her this last sunday and boy is she hot.

truck is a 1970 C20 cut down to a short bed.

Re: 383 stroker swap

While the motor was out, I cleaned up the engine bay a little bit. put in a new alum 3 core radiator, hoses, wiring.........more than I wanted to do.

Re: 383 stroker swap

This is where the fun stuff happens. so a simple crate motor turned into this:

I STARTED WITH A 350 4 BOLT MAIN BLOCK . I DID A COMPLETE REMAN ON THIS ENGINE. I HAD THE BLOCK BOILED, CHECKED AND BORED OUT 30 THOUSANDS. I INSTALLED NEW FREEZE PLUGS AND NEW CAM BEARING. THE ENGINE WAS ASSEMBLED WITH NEW FLATTOP HYPEREUTETIC COATED PREMIUM PISTONS AND BRAND NEW EAGLE CONNECTING RODS. THIS WILL TAKE THE COMPRESSION RATIO UP TO AROUND T0 10.5TO 1.STILL BEING ABLE TO USE REGULAR PUMP GAS. AND STILL BE ABLE TO GET OLD TIME THROTTLE RESPONSE.IT WAS ASSEMBLED WITH NEW EAGLE 383 STROKER CRANKSHAFT AND BEARINGS. BEFORE ASSEMBLY ALL COMPONENTS OF THE ROTATING ASSEMBLY WERE BALANCED TO PRECISION. EVERY CYLINDER WAS CLEARANCED AS IT WAS PUT TOGETHER.I INSTALLED A NEW HIGH VOLUME OIL PUMP,A NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE CAM AND LIFTER KIT. IT HAS A POWER RANGE FROM 1600 TO 5500 RPM’S.THAT IS THE STRONGEST CAM THEY MAKE FOR A STOCK TORQUE CONVERTER TO BE USED WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. IT STILL HAS A GOOD IDLE AND SOUNDS GREAT. I USED MODEL 1.94 CYLINDER HEADS. THEY WERE PROFESSIONALLY RECONDITIONED MAGNAFLUXED AND PLAINED. THEY WERE ALSO PORTED AROUND THE VALVE SEATS TO INCREASE FLOW AND ADD ABOUT 30 MORE HORSEPOWER.I USED A NEW HIGH RISE DUAL PLANE ALUMINUM 4 BARREL INTAKE MANIFOLD AND A NEW HOLLEY 600 CFM 4 BARREL CARBURETOR WITH AN ELECTRIC CHOKE. I USE THIS COMBINATION A LOT AND IT WORKS VERY WELL TOGETHER. THIS WILL GIVE EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE. I INSTALLED A NEW HIGH OUTPUT ASSULT FLAME THROWER HEI DISTRIBUTOR WITH NEW PLUGS AND CERAMIC WIRES. I ADDED A NEW FUEL PUMP AND A NEW WATER OUTLET WITH A NEW THERMOSTAT AND, A NEW WATER PUMP, ALSO A NEW ONE WIRE ALTERNATOR. I MAD E A COOL PHOENALIC PLATE FOR UNDER THE CARB AND WHEN SHE IS RUNNING, THE CARB IS SOOO COLD IT STARTS TO CONDINSATE.

Re: 383 stroker swap

I wanted to stay with the stock Ramhorns. they look good and I wanted them so my exhaust would not hang low.

Re: 383 stroker swap

I was worried about the heat with the Ramhorns, so I went with ceramic do-it-yo-self plug wires. I think the kind you dress in yourself look much better.

Re: 383 stroker swap

hard lined the fuld line to the pump, then to tank, so no rubber leaky. got new motor mounts, power steering lines, high torque mini starter and million dollars worth of other little things I'm forgetting.

of course an action shot of me looking like im working, but not really.

Re: 383 stroker swap

Looks great! I know that when I built my 383 stroker, I was overwhelmed with the increase in performance. It scares me to even think about doing full throttle runs!

Enjoy
