72 "converted" 4x4 sold for $79,000 at BJ
Just turned on BJ as they rolled a 72 4x4 off the block explaining that it was a former 2WD "converted" to 4x4. Looked pretty much stock- didn't get a good look at it. SWB I believe (would hope)- kinda crazy. Wish I could link to it. I believe it was lot 1572

Re: 72 "converted" 4x4 sold for $79,000 at BJ
Cheaper than building it. It's a short box, big block, hugger orange, fully restored 4x4 Cheyenne with Air, AM/FM, tach, marker lights, and so on.
Other than the engine compartment and wheels it looks reasonably authentic, but I am surprised that a non-original truck would pull this high. Imagine what it'd be worth if it had come from the factory that way. Actually, between you and me, I think it was priced and bought like an original but it wasn't born this way. I have to laugh when other people complain about people having "too much money". Meanwhile, they own 5 trucks. I have one truck. Every time I see a .sig with 3-8 trucks in it I don't feel the need to comment on it. For all anyone knows the buyer is a member or will be shortly. Take it easy on them. If this is the truck you want, you can write a big check now or 1000 medium checks over the course of the next 4 years building it yourself. There's no shortcut.

Re: 72 "converted" 4x4 sold for $79,000 at BJ
Crazy. I don't even know what to say about that price. It's a beautiful truck maybe 25-30,000 tops if I were buying it, and I think that's generous as its not a real 4x4. Pete, you could probably get 100 for yours!

Re: 72 "converted" 4x4 sold for $79,000 at BJ
I have to laugh when people think Barrett Jackson prices are "realistic" every day prices. Only way it's cheaper than building it is if you have no talent and have to pay a restoration shop to do your work for you. I completely did a frame off restoration of my 67 Chevelle, myself, and have about $24,000 into it. Of course I have hundreds of hours of my time, so if I was farming out that work, it's going to be well over $50,000. The seller of the 72 is laughing all the way to the bank

I have my checkbook ready for everyone that's going to sell me this truck for $24K. I can travel and will arrange for transportation. Strange how when I was a buyer trying to find a truck for 2 (3?) solid years no one was selling 'em at the prices you think are "right".

Either way you spin it, if the seller had $30,000 in parts and did all the labor, you are saying that the truck should sell for maybe $35,000? You don't make money that way. Nothing is free. Someone is paying for it.

The 71 K5 Blazer went for $59,000.00 , it was very nice. Chump change for some. There's places in this country were the billionaire's are pushing out the poor millionaire's .

Re: 72 "converted" 4x4 sold for $79,000 at BJ
Those who think these prices are realistic need to look hard at what else is out there & what they bring in. Labour & parts costs mean nothing, we all know that when you sell you rarely get everything back. There have & are trucks like these selling in the $20-30g range daily. Just because you didn't see it or buy it, doesn't mean it's not happening. If you look at all the trucks sold at BJ some shown on tv others not you'll see some actually went for a fair market price & others way over priced. To think that 4x4 is actually worth $90g in fair market value is crazy to be honest. Even an original wouldn't normally go that high.

Re: 72 "converted" 4x4 sold for $79,000 at BJ
The chances of this being someone's dream truck are slim. What's sad is you'll see it on ebay in a few weeks with a 124,900 buy it now...... the above poster looked for 2-3 years in all reality wasn't looking to hard with lots of K trucks selling in various places in the 15 -30 range. My 72 is all original with a.c. and tilt and I have 22k total after frame off including the $5500 I pd for the truck
Plus I only paid 17k for my 1972 Cheyenne super k20 |

Re: 72 "converted" 4x4 sold for $79,000 at BJ
Feeling better about all the money and time we have into our real 72 K10 Cheyenne. We did 90% of the work and it's spread sheet numbers are still high. When high investment in time and/or money builds are done the quality shows. NOS parts also push up the build prices.
The truck market is on fire. Especially GM 67-72. The square bodies are also on the rise. The 2nd gen Trans-Ams are hot and getting hotter. I think all of these vehicles would have climbed in value earlier if the great recession had not came about.

I agree that the price is too high. That could easily been build for a lot less than that. These sky-high auction prices just show how many people have more money than brains.

Re: 72 "converted" 4x4 sold for $79,000 at BJ
I'm not disagreeing with you, but think about if you paid a shop to build the entire truck for you. Labor would take up a big chunk of the total price, regardless of the quality of parts used.
