Don't know what's missing to get horn

What should be in the steering column to get horn to work, I have original steering column and the turn signals work. I'm using after market steering wheel with adapter and one post horn button. When removing steering wheel there is one round white plastic piece and below it is another white piece screwed in that controls the turn signals and below it are wires. I have bought a new horn but I'm thinking a relay is missing or one of the wires coming to column need to be extended, I don't know just fishing here.

Re: Don't know what's missing to get horn

what year is the truck ?
do you see a brass looking ring in the turn signal switch in the steering column .
the spring loaded button that goes through your steering wheel
touches the brass ring to make the horn work .
try touching a piece of wire from the brass ring to the steering shaft
and the horn should blow if everything else is hooked up right.
can you post a picture ?

More or less the stuff in this picture. If the wheel was repainted at one point, the metal hub in the center has to be bare metal or horn can't completing the circuit.

Ok these are the pics of my current setup maybe it will make giving instructions on what to do to get the horn working as I'm clear from your post and others something is missing. Also I put the voltage regulator in the pic, I assume that green wire should be connected to the horn as well, correct? When I put a test light on the black wire post its "hot" but when I connect the green wire to the horn and test the green post with tester it returns no light, is that due to ground issue, nothing connected in steering wheel, or faulty regulator?

Re: Don't know what's missing to get horn

great that you could post the pix.

the white part in your first pix. is the turn signal cam it should screw to the bottom of a factory steering wheel or the after market wheel adaptor to cancel the turn signals.

in pix #2 your brass ring is missing ,you can see a slot at the center top of the switch this is where the horn wire is . touch a wire from the slot to the shaft if everything else is good the horn will blow .

in the picture ack shows
you need the round white tube with the spring loaded brass pins to connect through your wheel adaptor .

looking in your steering column the black wire around the upper right screw is the horn wire. when grounded the horn will blow if everything else is ok.
maby some one on here may have a extra brass ring they could send you ?? anyone have a extra one ??

Thanks for the info, this is what I understand;
1. I need to find that brass ring and put it under the turn signal switch where basically that slot will be filled with part of the ring and the white tube with brass pins will fit through one of the holes on the turn signal cam( needs to be screwed to bottom of wheel adapter) that has to make contact with that brass ring, I'm correct so far?
2. What I'm not clear on is the the wire post on the bottom of the horn button, how will that setup be, I mean I connect one cable to the horn button contact of course but the other end goes where?

Re: Don't know what's missing to get horn

I used that very same horn button in my '76 Blazer. The center post is for the wire that should have come with the wheel.

It replaces the horn contact that goes in the stock wheel.

It should look similar to this when you get it together.

The button grounds itself on the wheel with the spring clip that holds it in place.

If you don't have the wire I found it cheap on amazon. Should be the one you are looking for.

Your local parts store may have one in stock as well.

Re: Don't know what's missing to get horn

hi yes the round white tube will go in from the top side of the steering wheel
you will see a round hole for it. line up the cam hole with the hole in the steering wheel.
the parts that tazimafied shows wont work with your 60's column .
they are for a later model column.
did you try to touch a ground wire to the black wire in the top slot to see if it beeps ?

Re: Don't know what's missing to get horn

when I touch the ground wire to slot yes it beeps but one thing I can't understand is when the brass ring is in place and the white tube thing is inserted from the top of signal cancel, the signal cancel is screwed in place now (it's not cancelling the signal but not a big issue), how will it stay in contact with the brass ring when I turn the wheel? I tried a test with ground wire in the place of the white tube and the wire turns and is no longer touching the slot .

Re: Don't know what's missing to get horn

that is good that the horn works when you tested it .
when you get a brass ring it has a tab that goes in the slot and
when you turn your wheel the brass button on the white tube will touch the brass ring
and the button will turn with the steering wheel .

Re: Don't know what's missing to get horn

The horn button provides a ground for the horn/relay, rather than a hot.
Its sort of a funny system, but it was used for many years so parts are easy to come by.
I think the brass ring is the cancel cam...

Re: Don't know what's missing to get horn

Try the help section at any auto parts store. They're light green.
(Sorry, should have edited the other post...)
https://www.google.com/search?q=dorm...cam&gws_rd=ssl

If you want to post or send pics of what you have, I can put some junk in a box and send it to you. A pic of the wheel w/ the horn button off and of the column under where the wheel goes should be enough.
The screws changed thread at some point, so the year of the wheel may help.
Sadly, the last guy I did this for didn't even say thanks after I paid to send him parts, so I'll ask for a few token bucks, and a thank you.

This is a pain to figure out the 1st time, but then you know. Its a puzzle...

Re: Don't know what's missing to get horn

franken the parts shown in your link are for 69 and newer steering colomn.

the brass ring jolobo64 is missing is pretty much flat with a tab that goes in the slot.
it snaps into the turn signal switch and does not move.
then it gets a plastic tube with 2 brass pins that are spring loaded that fits the 60's colomn's it gets inserted through the steering wheel then makes contact with the brass ring . im not shore how that after market horn button can contact the brass button .
you will most likely need to get the brass ring used .
unless you buy the whole turn signal switch new.

Re: Don't know what's missing to get horn

I just found this part , very costly if you had this and cut the wire and connected it to your horn button that would work if you had the brass ring in your turn signal switch .

http://www.impalas.com/1961-impala-h...t-harness.html.

post a picture of the second horn adaptor part you have flipped over .
not the button but the other part with the wire wrapped around in a circle.

So can I just buy the whole kit( it seems as if it comes with brass ring) you sent earlier and purchase a additional white tube bushing wouldn't that work without having to buy the second pic you posted and avoid cutting the wires? Here are the pics not sure but I think you need to see the total pic of the one with the spring wrapped around in a circle. Pic 1 is the inside of the button with metal cap and the Pic 2 is the bottom of it. Pic 3 and 4 are just the top and bottom view of cap. Of course when the button from pic 3 is installed the cap and spring are pressed down in place and I think when the horn button is pressed that metal cap touches the bottom metal plate I guess making some type of ground.

Re: Don't know what's missing to get horn

the first link I sent was of the whole turn signal switch for $61.31
then if you had the white tube with the 2 spring loaded brass buttons
im not shore if your horn button will make contact with it
to make the ground when you push the button that you have.

Been sometime since I posted, was traveling. Anyway bought the parts( whole turn signal kit and bushing with 2 spring load....) Jim mentioned(good looking). All is working until I turn the steering wheel, the ball bearing piece that sits in the turn signal housing around the metal steering rod, it works itself up and then it makes contact with surrounding metal( rod, brass ring, etc) and bam she blows the horn. So I need to know how to keep that ball bearing ring tight where it will not work its way up when I turn, any suggestions?
