Door Hinge pin replacement question
Can door hinge pins and bushings be removed and replaced with just the door removed? Fender on and hinges bolted to the cab still? I'm working on a '79, Thanks

Re: Door Hinge pin replacement question
That's the way I did mine. I made reference marks around the hinge with a sharpie then used a strap and cherry picker to hold the door and roll it out of the way after removing the hinges.

Re: Door Hinge pin replacement question
For those who have replaced the bushings and pins, who has the best quality kit? Need to do my '75, and don't want to use junk. TIA!

Re: Door Hinge pin replacement question
Did mine that way, was actually fairly quick and easy.

Re: Door Hinge pin replacement question
TX Firefighter had a strong opinion about what the best were, I think it was GM but don't recall for sure. I'd already bought some from Classic Parts when he posted about those. Mine fit far too easily, I should have got the oversized kit.

Re: Door Hinge pin replacement question
I tried the Dorman kit, all but one of those bushings shattered or cracked and were very brittle. I ended up scavenging original used GM bushings to get by. If I had to do it again and could find new GM bushings I'd go that route.

Re: Door Hinge pin replacement question
Thanks bud for that feedback, I have ranted about the Dorman products in my thread Restoring Rusty, and I am glad I will not waste my money on their hinge bushings.

Re: Door Hinge pin replacement question
Sure thing, Dorman seems to be hit & miss with their stuff. It's enough of a problem that I avoid their brand unless I get desperate.

Re: Door Hinge pin replacement question
I have two old threads on my hinge pin replacements. If you search for "door hinge pins" or my user name "tucsonjwt" on this forum you will see some pics of my project. I don't know if I have pics of the GM pins and bushings, but I think you can find pics on the for sale section here when I sold the extra pins and bushings I had. (I had to order them online, so I bought full packs of 5 hinge pins x 2 and one pack of 20 bushings - all GM OEM - because shipping cost was relatively high.)
I never got to use the Dorman pins and bushings because the diameter of the pins at the splined area below the head was too big to seat into the hinge. I did not want to drill out the hinges to fit aftermarket pins and bushings. You will find that the GM OEM pins and bushings are excellent quality. I have also had mostly bad experience with Dorman parts - poor quality, especially on trim parts. |
