Gasket remover
I'm trying to remove the old paper gaskets under the access covers on the side of the 4spd xmission on my C20. I had some old NAPA spray gasket remover that worked pretty well, but they don't sell it anymore. I tried Permatex remover. It is better than nothing, but not much. Any recommendations?

Re: Gasket remover
I've used those "Scotchbrite Roloc Disks" with an angle die grinder, just use the medium or fine grit stuff, I think its gray or blue in color.you don't want to dwell in the same area too long, it will remove metal if you do.
Just a recommendation. Ben |

Re: Gasket remover
I've had good results using a heat gun to soften the gasket and its adhesive and permit easier scraping but not in a confined space where plastic or rubber parts are nearby or especially where there are automotive oils or fuel of course..

Re: Gasket remover
...until a piece of wire from the wheel ends up it the case/engine/whatever...scary. I am in the razor blade crowd. But, on most of the car shows, you see them using die/angle grinders with what is probably scotch-brite pads. For me, that is uncontrolled debris flying everywhere.

Re: Gasket remover
I have a "gasket scraper" tool in my tool box (see above), but generally it only gets used to scrap grease from parts I am cleaning up. Not sharp enough for most gasket removal tasks.

Re: Gasket remover
Thanks for all the thoughtful responses. I ended up using a single edge razor blade. There was enough room to get to it.
