63 C10 283 hesitated than backfired
Working on a 63 truck that has been sitting for awhile. Put new plugs, points, wires, cap, rotor, coil and fuel pump. Carb looked fine so added new fluids and began start test. It wanted to fire up but hesitated than backfired and blew the oil cap almost thru the hood? Sound like a hole in the piston?

Try some starting fluid and see if you can at least get it to run. Since the bowl of that carb has been dry for who knows how long there could be anything in there. lol Might fill the bowl with fuel and even pour some down the throat of the carb. The choke it and it should fire. Could also do a compression test.

That's what I was thinking, if you removed it and put it back in could be 180 out.

Re: 63 C10 283 hesitated than backfired
Thanks everyone for your comments. We did take the distributor out but made sure it was on #1 piston than marked the location and marked the flywheel. I'll recheck the wires but if ones wrong really means two are wrong....

Along with all the good suggestions above, you probably changed it and meant to include it in your list but I have seen a bad condenser cause erratic spark with backfiring.

Re: 63 C10 283 hesitated than backfired
I'm not sure how marking the flywheel helps you set the timing. You do know the crank turns twice for each one rotation of the cam, and the distributor is driven by the cam? This really should not matter as long as the engine did not move while the distributor is out, but I'm just trying to understand how you are certain the distributor is lined up properly.
