700r4 shifting early

I have a stock sbc and 4.10 gearing running 30" tires. My truck shifts early across all gears. I dont have a working tach so I cant actually tell the rpms but its really noticeable when it hits od. If I am easily accelerating, it will hit od at no faster than 35, even a little sooner. It also takes forever to down shift. Anyways Im sure its a gearing issue, I fairly confident that the tv cable is adjusted correctly. So should I get a governor calibration kit or just a different governor? I have a oil pressure test gauge but without a tach I cant do the test properly.

Re: 700r4 shifting early

I would suggest checking out the 'Engine and Drivetrain' section of this forum. There are many, many, many threads there all about the 700R4. There is also a sticky all about how to rebuild a 700R4.

Re: 700r4 shifting early

I always set them , this way , first have some one hold your throttle pedal to the floor , and push the cable lock , and push the cable all the way back towards the firewall till it stops , this is a good starting point , test drive it and see if there is difference from before ? if it shifts to late , let the cable ahead one click etc till it is where you like it ? if there is no change at all ? I would make sure you have the correct cable and bracket ?

Re: 700r4 shifting early

its gonna be the TV cable its not adjusted right ... and also dont drive it till you have got it adjusted right because you WILL burn it up .. the way he told you to set the TV is the safest way so that you can drive it for testing it and getting it the way you like it ... but the way you have it now its not getting enough line pressure in the trans and it will kill it quick . if after you adjust it like he said and it dont fix it then we are talking Governor

Happy Truckin

Re: 700r4 shifting early

First and foremost, you have to make sure the TV cable is 100% correct. That means the correct throw as the throttle is opened. It's nothing like a kickdown cable of a TH350. Highly recommend a kit from Bowtie Overdrives (EZ-TV).

If you are 100% sure the cable setup is correct, I had this problem and it was the governor. Shop swapped out with a different governor (I think from a V6 setup) and the early shifting issues were gone. I think B&M makes one you can adjust. My buddy has been using that to get his to shift correctly for his diesel application (low RPM engine).
