Paint Code 548 vs. 518
I bought a couple cans of "touch up" rattle cans of base coat paint for my 1972 GMC C1500 from www.automotivetouchup.com. I got in on a bulk order with a buddy of mine.
My paint code on my SPID lists my paint as "548 WHITE/MEDIUM GREEN". My buddy told me that when he ordered the paint that the only color listed as "MEDIUM GREEN" under the 1972 GMC colors was code 518. I want to just do some painting to the firewall and inside the front fenders under the hood. These cans of paint are 20 bucks a piece so I am hoping that we ordered the right paint color. So my query is... does the 548 paint code include the white top along with the medium green 518? If so the 518 code should be the correct code for me to use to reproduce the factory color? I know I shoulda checked before buying. But.. here I am. LOL Thanks! Gary

Re: Paint Code 548 vs. 518
Swampy... I'm going to spray a small patch on the firewall near where the paint was under the cowl and fender so it's not faded and oxidized. So it will be the best spot for the true factory color to show through.
Gonna do it in the next couple of days. And Tim... thanks again! You are a great resource for this community! Gary

I'm interested in seeing it also.

Re: Paint Code 548 vs. 518
I finally got around to spraying a small patch to see how it matches up. The paint dried in a matte finish, so would probably need a coat of clear to be certain. I left the edges sharp on the area to see the contrast. I think tomorrow I will spray a spot with no tape around it near this spot and see if it blends in better.
I don't know. I think it looks a little too light of a green. I know this is 40 year old pain on my cab. But what do you guys think? Gary

Re: Paint Code 548 vs. 518
I bought 518 mixed by NAPA, and it was lighter than the original color also. They said it was the right formula, and the only one they had for that code. It seemed a little closer than what you got.

That doesn't look right, I'd show the paint mixologist that pic..

Re: Paint Code 548 vs. 518
To me it looks like the 64-69 code 503 and not the correct 518 needed. But then clears do change a color shade....
EDIT... Actually there were two very similar 503 codes 64-66 WE5121 and the 67-69 WE5139 Here is a link to more 518 cross codes. http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcod...=50&size=large

Re: Paint Code 548 vs. 518
So I sprayed some clear coat over the spot I painted. The clear is from the same company.
It didn't change the color at all. It still looks too light. SS Tim, as always, thanks again for your valuable input! Gary

Re: Paint Code 548 vs. 518
Just a thought, the GM internal number for the correct enamel 518 paint was WE5191.
http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcod...=50&size=large The earlier 67-69 (lighter) 503 (light green) was coded WE5139. http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcod...=50&size=large

Re: Paint Code 548 vs. 518
Looking at those 2 samples it does appear that the WE5191 is more correct for my stock color.
