installed a windshield in my 72' today
not a easy job at all. i had called safelight to come to my house to install and they said no problem. once the installer got here he said he could not install on older trucks nor did they have anyone that could. so he left the windshield and seal and told me good luck. so i got on youtube and watched a video from EGGE speed shop wow they made it look easy. my wife and I did a fine job,she is a real trooper

Re: installed a windshield in my 72' today
Very nice job! I was going to call safelite. Between my trucks and a friend of mines we have half a dozen to do so we were hoping for a discount. You say they wont do it? That's going to make things a little more time consuming. Any tips tricks or things to watch out for?

Re: installed a windshield in my 72' today
Those Safelite guys would last about oh two minutes in like 1980 when 99% were installed on a pinch weld.
OK the main things you need after the glass and the seals are some rope and dish washing liquid. Place the rope in the pinch weld place on the rubber[the groove that it sits in]lube it up real good with the dish soap. Place it on the pinch weld of the truck and with a little downward pressure have your helper start pulling the rope. It will fold the rubber over the pinch weld thus putting the glass in the truck. I always tell people that I am advising about the glass, to start with the back glass if you have it out too, cause it is smaller and with the exception of sitting in place by itself, it is good learning for the front. Once you do one you will be like why have I been dreading this? |

Good on you, and the Missus, for tackling it. Well done!

I've done a couple, it's intimidating at first. But take your time and use a lot of soap. You'll be surprised how good it comes out. Nice job you and your wife did.

I'm just surprised by the original post. If Safelite sent out an installer, they had to know what the windshield was going into. Their behavior is totally unprofessional and unacceptable. |

That's something I don't think I'll attempt. I imagine there's someone real good between here and Reno. Nice work. Your wife is a trooper.

Re: installed a windshield in my 72' today
I had just used the same advice for one of my customers who is building a truck at his home shop. I got him a glass through my glass guy and it was $79.00. How does that line up with what other guys are paying?

Sounds like a bait-n-switch to me. Convenient that they got the sale to a customer, knowing full well that they wouldn't install it. I'll never use them, knowing that. |

Nice job taking it on yourself, and if you have the shallow chrome trim that's an extra I have done several myself with 18 years glass experience, and they are not the easiest install.

Re: installed a windshield in my 72' today
Safelite does all the pickups here at work. The guy told me last year that because of the trim in the rubber, he wouldn't touch it. It's just more lucrative to do new pickups anymore I guess.

Re: installed a windshield in my 72' today
Last year I bought my windshield locally for $125 and a Precision Rubber seal for $35 online. I had the old one out and new one installed in about 2 hours. I never did a windshield before so I assumed these trucks were easy ones to do.

Re: installed a windshield in my 72' today
update; they are going to send me a $50,00 check. the costumer care rep said that their sales reps. are not trained on what trucks their installers can install, plus she told me since they did not install it there is no warranty on the windshield.
