Big block Chevy build
I have been reading as many threads as I can on this subject all over the web but I wanted to throw some numbers out before I start the plunge this weekend for final assembly.
I have done small block bottom ends but never anything far from stock or a big block for that matter (well its about time ) What I have: 1974 BBC bored .30 over Forged Rods - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SCA-26135 Forged pistons - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PBP-P4963F-030 stock crank .020 over and balanced Piston rings - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/slp-r9590035 The end goal is to have a shot of NOS so keep that in mind as well Now to my questions I have been reading up on recommended crank end play and connecting rod side clearance and am finding tons of mixed reviews on the subject and at the same time all of them are for small blocks is this information usable for my big block or do I need to follow a separate set of rules on this? Top ring gap of .022 Bottom ring gap of .025 Bearing clearance of .0020-.0025 Rod side clearance between .004-.025 I'm seeing is called "okay" I'm really wondering on this number though Crank end play on an application like mine of no less then .006 but I cannot find how much is to much on this I obviously don't want my crank walking around Hopefully someone with experience on this can help me out here before I have a heart attack or go insane from reading so many articles and threads with conflicting views. -Logan

Re: Big block Chevy build
Thanks for the input didn't see it until today when I came back to delete the thread due to no responses I ended up at .003 and was told that was fine by a local machine shop so I suppose it should all work out fine if anyone from this section is interested I posted up the progress pics in my build thread starting at post #100

Re: Big block Chevy build
Keep the post going. Supply details on the build. I'm interested how the build goes. I'm thinking of building one myself.

Re: Big block Chevy build
The heads that I went with are simply a money issue they are 119cc 781 heads that I ported and polished/gasket matched back when this engine was still in my 65 Impala then it had stock rods and hyperutectic flat tops. The impala was traded for the truck and I kept the engine.

Re: Big block Chevy build
now to the bump stick I went a little cheaper here too with a full roller in the future BUT I am following a Super Chevy article "budget build" for some of this to accomplish similar power numbers
Camshaft= http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-k1303 I also installed my own cam bearings that Friday night so nobody gets to worried that I'm insane and would skip that step

Re: Big block Chevy build
Then when I went to put the head gaskets I had ordered on I found that I had a problem with some cooling passages in the head being not drilled on my early block I contemplated cutting the gasket where the original cooling passage was but without any sealant around that area on the gasket I feared the worst if I did it so I forged ahead and went full speed ahead drilling the block even after it was nearly fully assembled

Re: Big block Chevy build
That same evening I had to cut down my valve guides to accept positive seals and double springs for such a high lift cam with no time to waste being that it was Monday night I got both heads cut and one on installed and torqued
My springs = http://www.alexsparts.com/dual-valve...appet-396-502/ I went for the 115lb seat pressure set following along with a set that summit tech support recommends seat and open pressures

Re: Big block Chevy build
I have been up most of the night last night working. Maybe it is just me. But those pistons don't look right in that block.
