bad luck with both my squares at the time!! burning up HEI module.. WHY?

been working out of town since last year. No love for the 87 1500 or the 85 2500. I've been coming back on the weekends from out of town. a couple week ago i took my 87 out and it just died on me.. still not running. Thats another story..

Took my 85 2500 5.7 out last week to get my wife some dirt. It just stopped while driving. Got a tow truck got it home and there was no spark. Changed out my cap rotor and coil.. Still nothing. Bought a new spark module and it worked fine. Ran 10 times better. 4 miles from home going to get dirt driving on freeway it started popping real bad like the spark plug wires were crossed even at low RPM, then it just died. Got it towed home Same exact thing, the module went out. Got a good 1 from my friend and it burned up 12 miles later..

What could cause this?? My truck ran like a champ.. Well it did lol.. never had problems or hot rod the hell out of it..

Any ideas??

Re: bad luck with both my squares at the time!! burning up HEI module.. WHY?

Had an issue a few month back with a bad regulator in my alternator. Was getting 19+ volts out. Didn't seem to harm anything but I noticed fairly quickly. Might check your volts at the input to the distributor with a known good volt meter.

Seems like something went bad to burn out that many of the same part in a short time.

I had the same thing happen . Just driving down the road and shut off . Module went out . I have had bad experience with part store modules . GM or delco for me . They cost more but are worth it . Also the grease you put under the module is important . I think it has something to do with heat soak , dissipate heat .

Some things I have learned over the years, I hope they may help:
Only use GM modules. Any other is a crap shoot.
Make sure you are cleaning off the old grease, and applying the new supplied grease each time. The grease is very important.
A bad pickup coil can cause premature failure of the module. While some might think it is overkill, I replace the pickup coil anytime I have to replace a module. I have not had a failure since implementing this practice.
Good luck, I hope you get it sorted out!

I have had that happen and learned that it needs a good ground . I would make sure all grounds are clean

Go over all your engine grounds. The module gets blamed quickly, I had the same thing happen, never changed the module, just went over the electrical system. Has been running fine for 10+ years since.
Don't forget to clean up the clamp and the base of the distributor where the clamp makes contact as that is its ground.

Alex.
