Glove Box Question?

I am new to these trucks but I was wondering is the glove box suppose to spring open when you push the button or are you suppose to grab it by the top side and open it with your hand like mine.

On mine, which is now removed, it didn't exactly spring open. It's just a release. In other words, grab it by the top side and open it with your hand like yours

There should be a spring-like mechanism that causes the door to drop open when the button is pushed and released. It's the wire-like thing (sort of a mini torsion/sway bar arrangement) that can be seen in the picture below. It extends from side to side and looks the same at both ends. The door doesn't exactly spring open, but you shouldn't have to pull the door to open it.

Now that I think about mine, which I have to physically grab at the top after pushing the button, that my long hinge/spring must be worn out or broken/out of shape. Kind of annoying but I don't open it much. I may need to replace it some day if it isn't a royal pain to do so..

I misunderstood the question, as I didn't realize you had to pull on it. Of course you have to guide it down. Otherwise you're not doing your panel any favors, which is where I thought you were going.

In the big scheme of things, it's real simple. You guys sure your button just doesn't require some lube or is bad? Doesn't seem a lot can go wrong with the wire spring.

True. Not much can go wrong with the spring. However, it's easy to place it in the wrong location when reinstalling the glove box door.

If the spring is there and placed correctly, lube is always a good idea.

Yeah mine wasn't there so I ordered a new bracket and it comes with the spring.

How come the end of my spring scratches the lower RH corner of my panel? Is that common? It's never been removed.

I'm not sure what you are describing when you say "the lower RH corner of my panel". Do you have a picture?

Here you go Jim. I wouldn't think it's influenced by the missing glove box. Don't know for certain, because as long as I've owned this truck, it's never had a box. The door seemed to be installed correctly, opened and closed well. The door spring looked fine, and was likely as it left the factory. Perhaps I should post a picture of the glove box door, hinge and spring? The end of the spring dug into the panel pretty well, and it's not just a scratch.

I think the hinge captures the spring. It looks like yours has slid over. You need to get it back under the hinge.

Here's a picture of mine from a different angle. Does your spring have the bend in it to form sort of a "foot"? You can see some slight wear from the spring rubbing but nothing like yours. If that foot broke off, it could leave a sharp end that would cause the wear. Your wear pattern also appears closer to the face of the dash which would be likely it the foot broke off.

Thanks for posting this question... I'll have to look at mine. I know it pops open about half an inch maybe. And I only remember that because my son opened it the other day while we were working on the interior.
I know I use to have a 70 that you had to hold the button with one and and pull open with the other.

Now you just have me curious. Like I said. Thanks for posting the question.

I bought a new hinge from Ecklerstruck.com and the spring comes with it, I haven't seen it by itself but that doesn't mean someone doesn't sell it that way. I think I payed $20 for the hinge and spring.

I've come to the conclusion the damage to the corner per the image I posted was not the result of the spring (sorry). A screw or similar must have slipped into the corner, and the damage was caused when the lid closed. On another note, the door latch plate wasn't screwed to the panel. The door operated without them, so they're probably for the liner, and were lost when the liner was removed. Unless someone advises differently, seems safe to believe the latch uses the same screws as those for the rest of the liner.

The screws that attach the latch plate to the dash appear to be the same as those attaching the liner. Also, if you are a nut for originality, the screws attaching the hinge to the door are the only ones that are painted (see my pics in previous posts). The others are all black phosphate.
