Ah troubles on the way home!

So here's something new been picking up the gf from work every day in the truck and has been fine, cruised around back and forth an hour a day. Well today was different a bit colder but was running fine when I got there and sat idle. So we are headed home and just down the street the truck starts bogging my first reactions was oh heck I'm empty..

Started right back up made it to the gas station. Put 40$ premium in. Looked in my gas tank I could see there was gas still in there so thought hmm maybe it isn't picking up fuel. Then I saw the fuel filter was full.

As soon as I let the throttle out I lose any power to the engine now it won't hold idle for long sits at maybe 3-400 rpm then dies after 10 seconds and smells like it's running extremely lean.

1968 c10 with a 283 and Saginaw 3 speed

If you are running a stock carb there may be a small cartridge filter in the fuel inlet on the carb. If so try changing that. Also the fuel sock on the pickup tube in the tank may be plugged.

I'll check the small filter and there's fuel going into the glass filter after the fuel pump still. I'm using it as a gas line sight right now to monitor this week long test. I can hear fuel squirt what I pull on the throttle linkage This is a brand new gas tank relocated to the rear which I should have mentioned.

Is the tank vented? Did you notice air sucking in when you took the gas cap off?

Hmmm, sounds like a lot of things. Ignition module possibly going out is the first thing I am thinking.

Run through the fuel system and eliminate that first which should be easier, then ignition.

Do you have spark?

Tank is vented, didn't hear any presume or suction. My first thought was to check vacuum leaks

disconnect the fuel line at the carb, run a rubber hose into a jar and have someone crank the engine over, you should get a steady stream of gas, this will eliminate if it is the fuel pump going bad or not,also you mentioned that you have a glass fuel filter, please get rid of that immediately and replace with a see through plastic one, the glass can crack lengthways and spray gas all over the engine, it has happened to me and others on this forum, luckily I didn't burn my truck up...and like others have said, replace the small filter in the carb.....let us know what you find out.....

Get rid of glass filter, I had same problem. I could see filter was full, so I looked everywhere else. It was the crappie glass filter, it had a tiny piece of something blocking it. At least it's a easy start. I replaced two sending units, and a pump. It was the filter.

I will change all the filters and give everything a good clean to start, maybe see how black my spark plugs are and yes I meant rich. It's just odd that it would be fine literally until we left sat and idled for 20 mins normally

don't know what kinda carburetor you have but flooding/ blubbering/ rich/ won't idle/ loading over is usually trash in the needle & seat on the fuel inlet. I have Holleys on 3 old vehicles. Easy to clean or replace needle & seat on them, don't remember on Edelbrock/Carter/Rochester. Trash the size of a pepper flake's all it takes. GOOD LUCK!

Use a metal fuel filter not plastic those also can lead to issues and leaks. Sounds like your needle and seat has something holding it open and letting in too much fuel. Also check and smell your oil for fuel in it. If there's any question whether fuel is in oil change it before doing any running of engine

Has anyone had such a moment as this? A moment of panic and complete ignorance where the answer was just to look at what's going on? My freaking brake booster vacuum line popped off...thank you I'm an idiot.

The brakes should have felt harder to press when it happened, but prob went unnoticed due to the engine stumbling all over. Yeah sometimes things aren't so obvious lol
