Rear axle flip question

The previous owner of my truck flipped the rear axle, and put a small homemade c notch in the frame. He said that he also removed a few leafs from the springs, and put a 3" lowering block in. The rear still sits a little high. Somthing don't seem right, if there was no notch, there would be 3" to the bottom of the frame, with a flip, and a 3" block. I'm not real keen about the blocks in the rear, but I still need to go lower by about 1" to take a little of the rake out. There are still 4 full length leaves in the spring packs. I have some shackles that will lower 1 or 2 inches, but it should already be plenty low with a axle flip, and 3" blocks ,right?

Re: Rear axle flip question

Also, the c notch the guy put in is a half of a 5" pipe on each side, it is about a 1/4" thick, and is welded in good, is this good enough?

Re: Rear axle flip question

This is how the truck sat before I pulled it apart. Not the best pic, but the best one I have on me. I think about another inch lower in the rear would be about right. It seems that guys get that much drop with just a axle flip, maybe my truck has some super duty rear leafs?

Re: Rear axle flip question

What do the rear spring shackles look like? You should have that drop without the blocks I think ? I just took out a 2.5" lift block and 1 shortest spring out of a 9 leaf pack(one side was broken) . Left the overloads in and flipped axle I didn't get c notch in yet but I have 1.5" to frame with bump stop removed I got just over 8" drop taking out the blocks and a flip

Re: Rear axle flip question

I don't like flip brackets, I use a stock style perch welded with holes drilled right where I like the axle sitting

Re: Rear axle flip question

Those can't be the stock springs, my springs are currently unloaded and they don't have half the arch you have in yours. The C notch is good.

Here is the best pic I have of the shackles at the moment. I'm not sure why the pictures load sideways from my phone, sorry.

Re: Rear axle flip question

I have 4.5" between frame and axle tube. No weight on chassis, no blocks, and heavy duty 5 leaf springs with one leaf remove to be more like standard springs.

Re: Rear axle flip question

I see you guys have 52" and mine is 56". But that shouldn't make a ride height difference just spring rate ? Mine are original springs as well. I've had similar results with same setup on 2 other trucks . I'll Post a pic tomorrow when I get home

Your guys trucks do look similar. I guess that's why they say trucks do end up different some times. HD should have 8 and overload? Like big ten/ heavy half

Re: Rear axle flip question

The 1/2 ton heavy duty springs have bigger eyelet bushings and 5 leafs.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: Rear axle flip question

I'm not sure if the blocks bother me enough to buy new springs right now. I have to fork out another big wad of cash to buy the small stuff to finish this truck up. For the time being, I will throw the new shackles in and see how it looks, and then add new rear springs to the "stuff to replace after the truck is done" list. Thanks guys!
