Clutch head screw drivers?

I keep running into these darn clutch head (aka butterfly or bow tie) screws on my '50 Chevy, but I can't find a source for any drivers that fit. I've purchased two separate sets of drivers from different locations and neither would fit the old factory Chevy screw heads - one even claimed specifically to be for 47-54 Chevy trucks! I know a guy who has some ancient clutch head drivers handed down from his deceased father and those fit perfectly, but I'm tired of driving 3 hours round trip to borrow his. Anyone know a source for some that ACTUALLY FIT?

the clutch heads in the specialty bit kits fit like... another word that rhymes with bit kit and fit.

I got a set from bowtie bits, they fit perfectly and werent too expensive. they make a screwdriver handled set http://www.bowtiebits.com/store/stor...Category_ID=45 but I bought the 4 piece set that goes in a 3/8 ratchet. http://www.bowtiebits.com/store/stor...Category_ID=45

they havent broken, but a few of the larger old steel screw head have stripped out on me.

Re: Clutch head screw drivers?

I'd say get the clutch head socket set. I got a set of screw drivers from someone a while back Classic parts I think but wish I had bought the socket bits.

Re: Clutch head screw drivers?

Thanks gentlemen. I don't have an account set up at Bowtie Bits, but I do have one at Classic Parts, so I'll give their set a try.

Just a warning: my search on this forum lead to many sources of clutch head drivers, but as I said in my original post, many of those absolutely do not fit at all. One post mentioned a guy actually measuring different drivers from different companies and finding quite a disparity. The ones I got that didn't fit were a generic set at an auto parts store and an Ebay set which claims they are specifically for 47-54 Chevys. At least they refunded my money.

I'll let y'all know how the Classic Parts units work.

Re: Clutch head screw drivers?

The first tool I ever bought off a SnapOn truck. Of course since then, thousands upon thousands of dollars worth. But this was the first, to work on my truck around 1976.

Re: Clutch head screw drivers?

i have a couple small ones and for the rear fender bolts
often they don't fit the sheet metal clutch head screws
for those i grind a flat screwdriver the correct with to fit in snugly
works every time

you can also drill out the head and replace them with phillips heads

I bought mine from Snap-On years ago. Everything fits as expected, even when the screw is rusty.

does classic sell the socket set? I didnt see it on their site. I bought a set of 1/4" screwdriver bits from I think Titan? and it was difficult to get 70 year old bolts to turn with a screwdriver, I appreciated the extra torque of a ratchet. The only problem I have had like I said is on the larger clutch head hardware like rear fenders and door hardware, the old steel just strips and I end up drilling them.

Re: Clutch head screw drivers?

I bought this set from horrible freight. It has some of the smaller ones used for trim pieces. Worth $10 just for the clutch heads. They work best with my 1/4" impact.

Re: Clutch head screw drivers?

I have purchased a screwdriver set at Napa, but opted for a 3/8" Drive socket style set. I purchased them from Chevs of the 40's. The socket set makes it nice when coupled with an Impact driver. Only had a few times where I've had to drill them out.

Got mine on Amazon for about 20 bucks.

For the rusted in ones I used a little roil and heat then they came out

Re: Clutch head screw drivers?

I purchased a set of around 100, assorted universal bits at the local Lidl discount supermarket for around £10 about $15 it is a German company so the quality of their tools is pretty good,( not snap on or facom quality) simply because of the "butterfly tools" I also have some snap on butterfly sockets but at around £10 each, I guess you pay your money and take your choice. As with anything that has not been unbolted for the last 60 0dd years it does pay to use a penetrating oil, and clean the threads where accessible as a precaution. I've only had limited success with a rattle gun as the tend to strip the bolt head.

Speaking of penetrating oil, this is the best I've ever used.

someone on here once told me to mix acetone to transmission fluid 2:1. it has gotten things unstuck I never thought would budge. sometimes though the rust is too strong, I just drilled out 3 wheel studs on a 41 chevy to get the artillery wheels off. the lug nuts were rusted down from a 3/4 to an 11/16.

My dad swears by brake fluid mixed with marvel mystery oil. Just be careful what it gets on.

Thanks so much Bryan, when my son came in the house after work last night I had printed these out and had them for him to see. We laughed and laughed going over them. It was a nice time with him so I thank you.

Re: Clutch head screw drivers?

Joedoh, I probably have every penetrating oil they make, I like the 1 to 1 acetone/trans fluid the best. You can actually watch it penetrate. I use it a lot to get rust off of tools, I just spray it on let it work a minute or 2 and steel wool or emery cloth the rust off. Use a metal air tight can. I use a metal compressed air charged spray can. The acetone evaporates rapidly and your left with trans fluid. Make sure you shake it up every time you use it, the 2 different viscosities separate quickly. Don't spray it on plastic. I hope we didn't hijack this post. Now back to clutch screwdrivers.
