backup camera

Has anyone put one on their truck? In my defense, I did first search "backup camera" but all I got were threads about backup lights and people bragging about their new camera. Is there a way to search where all words must appear such as "backup + camera" or other magic like that.

Re: backup camera

To get the search option to work you need some out of this world magic. I have a backup camera on my military truck and I love it. I would stay away from the wireless cameras as they may have poor connection or interference. I used the 7" TFT Camera that I got off ebay or something like that. I paid about $30 for it. It works fine but you may want to get something of better quality.

Re: backup camera

If you fill in backup camera in the blank at the top of the page, and select 67-72chevytrucks.com and click the google button, it appears there are lots of threads talking about backup cameras. I think this topic is interesting and I'm going to look into it myself.

Re: backup camera

I don't have one on my Blazer, but I have one on my motorhome and my wife's Highlander has one. I think they're great, as long as you remember they're only part of the picture.

Re: backup camera

Put it in quotes, it will look for that exact phrase:

"backup camera"

Re: backup camera

I think the ones that have the screen built into your rearview mirror are especially interesting, I may get the one Costco offers. I like Costco's no-nonsense support and return policies, but I see the reviews people give on line for that one are good.

Re: backup camera

I asked about a backup camera here once. That was the thread when I learned just how terse and grumpy "cdowns" can be.

*I think well of cdowns and I have defended him on here before, he's given me great advice, just not about dash cams and back up cameras.

I want one also along with a good dash cam. Yes, the backup camera is not a replacement for checking mirrors and using your brain.

Re: backup camera

I put train horns out back. I don't care about my truck, have insurance for other cars, don't have high cliffs around here, I just don't want anyone getting hurt

PanelDeland has advised me about the "can't see out the back" problem of the panel. I am also aware of the "can't see out 4 & 5 O'Clock problem."

There was a panel on CL a few weeks ago (I think I posted that ad into the burb and panel forum) that apparently had a camera to cover both those angles.

Re: backup camera

Very easy to install. Buy a kit from ebay (or where ever). It will come with the wire harness and camera. Then all you need is the LCD mirror which sometimes come with the kit, sometimes not. Install the mirror on the glass, install the camera out back, tie the camera power into your backup lights and you are good to go. Don't forget to add an inline fuse. Most mirrors also come with the wire boot to cover the wire going to the mirror.

Re: backup camera

Thanks gable74. After I get the truck running I will try and put in a camera. I'm not a fan of anything stuck to the window or even dash but I am sure I can figure out something that will work for me.

They have small (3" x 5") LCD screens that can be used if you don't want the mirror setup.

Some of the RV systems use three cameras - one at the rear, and one each near the front on the sides to give a panoramic view.

Re: backup camera

You panel guys that want to run the stock round mirrors should check these out. I think you could adapt them to work with our trucks.

Re: backup camera

I bought this unit from Amazon. It consists of a camera and a wireless transmitter. You use your smart phone as the monitor and the transmitter communicates with it using WIFI - just like your router at home. You hook up the red wire to your ignition ( not the backup lights ) so the transmitter is on whenever you are driving. You have to do this because there is 1 or 2 second delay while the transmitter and your phone have a hand shake. Anyway, the picture is clear and there doesn't appear to be any lag. I caution that this solution is only for those that are comfortable using their phones.

First scenario, you head off the Home Depot in your truck. While you are driving the phone and transmitter connect by themselves. When you get to HD, you select the app on your phone and there is your image.

Second scenario, you spouse asks you to move your truck in front of your house. Your phone is already connected to your WIFI router in your house. This time you have two steps, drop the house WIFI and connect to transmitter WIFI manually and then select the app on your phone.

If this is too much trouble, get a unit with it's own monitor. I chose the wireless one because I didn't want the clutter in the cab and I use my phone all the time.

Re: backup camera

Arise, arise the dead thread!!! So, any new installations? I’ve actually been thinking about a rear view mirror with GPS and backup camera and I’ve seen a couple that have the dash cam as well. My goal is to have a mirror that doesn’t seem totally out of place and I really don’t want a square screen hung on the dash. Input?

I put one in the Panel Truck, graciously given to me by a board member, and it works great. The monitor has a small oval stand on the bottom so I just set that in the ashtray and push the ashtray closed until it is locked in against the base. That works really well and I can easily remove it and put it in the glove box if I want.

Re: backup camera

I'll be getting one eventually. That camper shell restricts a lot of the peripheral view.
