My truck with stock wheels and caps...

Not a great photo (will take more later) but should give you a rough idea of how it looks.

Factory rims, NOS hubcaps, about as stock as my truck will ever get!

YES! Nothing against the previous set, but, personally, I think these looks awesom(er) on there. Beautiful truck and the way you've put it together lends itself to stock steelies and caps - my 2c only, but to me, my 2c is a whole dollar

Re: My truck with stock wheels and caps...

I prefer them myself, actually. The only thing I like better about the later model wheels is that they're a little wider, a touch taller, and just better rubber (because these tires actually came with the truck!). But you can't go wrong with the factory pieces, it just took a couple of years to get like-new caps and wheels and have them blasted and powdercoated and so on....

Where did you find 16.5" tires?

Re: My truck with stock wheels and caps...

Looks great Thanks for preserving an important nugget of GMC history. This truck is going to Harvard. Big plus on the steel wheels and period correct hubcaps. IMO, "the dealership showroom look", will never goes out of style, it will withstand fad after fad, year after year, with grace and style.

When I bought it, the truck came with new 16.5" rubber all the way around. Still have the little injection molding nubs, so they're close to brand new.

For the spare I had the tire shop just save me one. He said it varies by location... some of the more blue collar neighborhoods get them in frequently on old trucks and trailers but not so much in my area, though he did find me one!

What's left? Mount the spare and the jack, and I think I'm done!

Once again Jocko and I are on the same page. Don't get me wrong Dave, your truck is gorgeous either way. I prefer this look though.

I gotta be honest, that is the touch your truck was missing, she looks awesome! While I do appreciate some of the custom touches some guys do on their trucks its always a pleasure to see the factory look, they really got it right back then...

Very nice....very, very nice.
Quick question Dave:
-are those the NOS caps you bought last year?
Those rims look really similar to the Ford 8 bolt rims that look/work so well on the 3/4 tons.
Looking good...now, you need to post up the pic of the new option so we can see the difference.
all Good

Yes, those are the NOS caps. And yes, I'm watching my truck out the window so don't try anything :-)

The rims are GM, so far as I can tell - I picked up a 5th from a local friend on the board and it matched the other 4 perfectly, so I assume they're all original. They cleaned up really nicely too, no pitting, just clean.

Any in case anyone searches for it, yes, they original 1970 wheels that came with 1/2 studs work just fine with the 1972 9/16" studs, which I upsized to at all four corners.

Re: My truck with stock wheels and caps...

Thanks for all the kind words, folks! Looks like the stock wheels are a hit :-) Here's an indoors pic without all the glare, but just another phone pic. Outdoors it always photographs sort of like a candy color, but indoors it just looks factory blue. Not sure why!

Looks great. Probably my favorite scheme too. Shame it's not stock on a 71-72.

Re: My truck with stock wheels and caps...

The wheels look way better than the other wheels.

You just made a sweet truck even better.

The white on the wheels ties it all together on your truck and makes it look more like a classic.

Only if ya had a tad less back spaceing on the rear wheels.
(oe rims just look too sucked in) thats the only reason i went wider. Also your "other" taller tires on those wheels would make it all look bad azz...jmo.
Nobody needs too tell ya its a awesome truck!

The oe wheels are still way way more better looking "on" the truck than the others.

Re: My truck with stock wheels and caps...

I do love the look. The colour on the wheels seems to match the white on the truck. Did the factory paint the wheels white? I ask because the ones on mine are painted silver, and they don't look right to me.

Believe it or not for the other rims I had spacers to clear the Dana60 hubs, and while I don't need them for the OEM wheels, I left them on. It widens my rear track about an inch over stock.

Some years (like 68 GMC) were argent silver, some years (like my 70 GMC) were white. My white is not a perfect match, but the local experts seemed unsure if the 8-bolt wheels were the same GM white color code or just a commercial white, so I'm not overly concerned about it. They're very close.
