Axle education needed

I have a 98 Silverado with the GM 10 bolt rear, and my 69 has the 12 bolt. Is there any significant difference between these units? I note that the 10 bolt, which is considered a pretty light duty axle, has a higher axle weight rating than the 12 bolt. Any info would be appreciated, and thanks ahead of time.
