Canister next to battery?

What is that big coffee can looking specimen next to the battery? Has a nozzle for a hose on top and the cap says Rochester. Supposed to be hooked to the carb right?

It is an evaporator canister. Fumes from the carb evaporate & go into this can. They are breathed off when you start the engine. Some are hooked to the gas tank also.

It's a charcoal canister, supposed to catch the fumes from the tank.

Exactly. It should be connected to the evap system, not directly to the carb.

My 71 had that thingy, but my 69 does not. One less thing to get in your way under the hood. But, just to make a positive contribution here, I seem to recall that the charcoal canister on my 71 had a replaceable filter. Might be worth checking.

Re: Canister next to battery?

My dad unhooked my charcoal canister decades ago thinking it was "somehow a drag on performance." LOL SMH!

Charcoal canisters are still used on cars to help catch gasoline fumes. My 2002 Honda has one. I plan to replace my charcoal and hook mine back up also.
