Re: Won't quit running

Did you replace the ignition switch or just the key tumbler?

Are you still running the original generator/external regulator or is it switched to alternator?

Re: Won't quit running

Is it actually running or just deseiling (run on).
If it quits when you put it in gear and let the clutch out, then it's deseiling.

I'd definitely check the wiring. At the starter make sure the R and S terminals are correct. Since you wired in the HEI you probably added a steady 12 volt source. Make sure that 12 volt source is keyed. I had a similar problem. Good luck.

Re: Won't quit running

Today I took it out for drive and when I got back home not only would it not quit running with the key off but continued to run with the battery cable disconnected had to pull my fuse to my distributor for it to quit and yes it will continue to run n gear n my altanator is wired from same source as my distributor both fused and tied into pink wire on new ignition switch

Sounds like your ignition wiring is wrong, and is always powered. It starts because the starter isn't always powered, but you have constant, instead of switched 12v power going to the ignition circuit.

It didn't always do it and don't always do it And the wiring for the ingnition switch is original to the truck I only butt spliced two wires to the original wiring being the pink wire from the ignition for the hei distributor and the other for the altanator both fused

Re: Won't quit running

Sounds like you're getting closer... Since it was still running when you pulled the battery cable the distributor must be getting fed straight from the alternator. I'd follow the wiring and see if there is power to the distributor with the key in the off position.

Re: Won't quit running

What alternator you running? Large wire should run to the Battery or the batt cable on the starter .... Maybe to the horn relay if there is at-least a 10 gauge wire to it from the battery

Re: Won't quit running

I went with a non ballast wire straight from the ignition fuse at the fuse block to the distributor. Just make sure to check your wiring so the alternator doesn't provide power to the distributor with the switch off.

Re: Won't quit running

I had the same run on issue I had to disconnect the HEI wire from the fuse block to get it to shut down. I installed the diode in the wire harness as shown in the post and it has never happened again. got the diode at local electronics store.

Yep, had the same issue when I converted my wagon over to a internal regulated alt. Had to put a diode in line. Solved the problem. Did the same thing to my Camino.
