Re: 396 block

68 was the first year for a 396 in a pickup. Remember that the 68's came out in the fall of 1967, so the date could easily be in 67 for a 68 model pickup.

Re: 396 block

396s came out in 1965 , in corvettes , impalas [second half of year , first half were 409s] and the ultra rare [201 units] z11 chevelles , the 65 model year 396s had a one year only oiling system and an oil grove in the rear cam journal . They were rated at 425 hp in the vets , and made serious power

I know this is an old thread but.....the rare 396 in the '65 Chevelle would be the Z16.

Also, '65 & '66 were the years for the oil grove in the rear cam journal. Not sure if this was exclusive to the 396/375 hp (or 396/425 hp in Corvette).

Re: 396 block

I know a couple of people that ruined their motors because they didn't know about the rear oil grove.

Re: 396 block

Be careful identifying the old 396's by the grooved rear journal on the cam.

My 68 original 396 pickup engine had a grooved rear journal. Surprised me.

Talked to my engine builder (he's a dedicated Chevy guy, built all kinds of racing stuff, etc, seen a lot...) he told me Chevrolet used those early cams past 1966 to use up the cams they had left over. The grooved cams CAN be used on later engines, but early engines MUST have groove, for oiling purposes...

He told me the determining factor on this was whether or not the engine in question has a factory type spin on oil filter setup.
My 68 has the spin on filter...

It's funny that the 396 in my pickup has ALL the same parts (heads, valve size, cam, carb, intake, domed pistons, comp ratio...) That engine in a car is rated at 325 HP, but a bunch less in a pickup.
Likely the internal political process didn't want a pickup with the same HP rating as a car, or wanted emissions folks to somehow think engine had "something" different about it...

Re: 396 block

1966 chevy truck I know the guy bought it brand new special order it was a 396.See that's one thing that most people don't know if you had the money you could get it any way you wanted it.What year did the corvette have the 396 or the 1964 chevelle had the 396.So what ever your book states it might of not been done at the factory but i hear weird stuff that came out of the Calif Plant Fremont. But i know of a few dealerships had not problem doing what ever the customer wanted Customer is always right. Its his way if he has the money.

Re: 396 block

68 trucks could get a 67 block, 68-s were made late 67 and engine usually made before the vehicle

Special order as in factory done or Dealer installed? I don't see any way that it would have been factory. Would have been problems with exhaust manifolds, cooling, mounts....... I could see a Dealer install for a wealthy customer maybe.

I've had two 396/325 65 Impala SS's - really liked em both. But there were a handful of the 425 hp 396 (L78) Impalas in addition to the vettes, what I would give for one of them Not as rare as a Z16, but I think there were around 1800 or so made. Hard to find today, always wanted one...
