My truck has a stock column and steering wheel. The top is has back and forth play in it, can I replace the upper bearing and where would I buy this? How hard is it to replace?
Thanks for your help Mark |

Re: 1956 steering column bearing question
FYI - I replaced that steering head bearing in my 49 ( same as TF series). I had changed to R&P steering. Anyway, I had the same play and I could hear it, too - drove me nuts. When I changed the bearing, it was just as bad. However, I have a mustang ll FE and R&P steering, & I think the needle bearing design just doesn't work with that. If you have the stock steering, (leaf spring FE) with the heavy steering box as an anchor on the frame, a new bearing is an easy fix with good results.
I had to change, so I used a plain ididit straight hot rod column & someone adapt a 54 steering wheel to it...much, much nicer + also gained self-cancelling turn signals.
