Ok. Many times when during assembly at the plants stuff isnt totally tightened until the parts are all together.
I work in Auto Assembly at Honda of America in Marysville,Ohio.
So i have an very good perspective on this. As well as from working in my shop.
Loosen up the engine mount bolts. As well as the mounts on the brackets. Then put the engine in. Chances are you will be able to get the mounts on. Then finish tightening everything up.

The motor mounts on the 72, are they the original mounts?
What year big block towers you using?
72 was a one year only type of motor mounts and towers.

towers

Everything is out of a 72 C30.
If the 72 towers are different, how do you make them work? Why do they bolt up in a 71 frame with no problem?

That I can not answer.
TTT for some one who can answer this.

After thinking for a moment, I do know the C/30 frame is taller. I DON'T know (rather can't remember) if that maters when it comes to the motor mount towers or not.

1972 BB 1/2ton-1ton frame engine mounts are all the same no difference by weight rating, 72 BB frame engine mounts will install in 68-71 trucks without modification, but you must use the 1 piece 72 engine mounts attached to the motor.
68-71 BB 1/2ton-1ton frame engine mounts are all the same no difference by weight rating, 68-71 BB frame engine mounts will install in 72 trucks without modification, but you must use the 5 piece 68-71 engine mounts attached to the motor.
73 up BB frame towers differ from both 68-71 style, and 1972 style though they look very similar to the 72's.
I would assume that its 1 of these 3 towers you are using and just have the wrong engine mounts installed on the motor for the year of frame tower you found and are using.
Just because you pulled the motor from a 72 does not mean that its a original 72 setup. Upgrading to a BB is very popular and everyone doesn't always use the exact year style that there truck is.
Think back to when you pulled the towers was motor mounted on a 1piece motor mount to the tower or a 5piece? Then use exactly the same.
If it was in a 72 it will go in yours also, the donor truck being a 1 ton does not matter.
All the above mounts can also be installed in a 67 but the drivers side frame rail will need to be notched like 68-72 frames are to clear the engine tower at the frame.

Ira,
Can you get us any pics of the mounts / frame brackets?

Maybe we can help get you sorted out. (Plus it helps ME if I can look at it)

I have done this conversion to 2 67s and Paul is correct, however both sides of the frame need to be notched to fit the 72 towers. I explain all of it verry well in our Panel Project section of our website. There are pictures and explanations to what and why the work had to be done. Here is a link: http://www.classicheartbeat.com/67_panel_project.htm
Lots of good information in there.

Thanks to everyone
I got them to fit; whiched the left frame mount to the right bolted right up"had to use the back hole on the bottom of the mount . moved the mount all the way to the front & the motor fit right in with a little adjusting. Ira
