Adding tailpipes to reduce sound

Currently I run dual Porter mufflers exiting in front of the rear wheels. I find it a bit loud on long drives and I am wondering if adding some tailpipes going over the axle and out the back would help take the drone away. Anybody have any insight as to what kind of sound reduction this might achieve?

They will. I'm currently without tailpipes on my K10, but just adding turn downs to my old mufflers helped a bunch. I replaced the mufflers with something symmetrical (the old outlets weren't the same) and I haven't done turn downs yet, because I'd like to do tailpipes to get the noise - and smell and smoke - further away from the cab.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll have to get it in to the muffler shop. We have a local guy around here who is a real artist with pipes but it's tough to get anything done because he's only open whenever he feels like it.

If you have the time, and the skill, and preferably a welder. I've thought about doing this, mainly because the quotes I got to have tailpipes bent were a bit more than I want to pay.

Tailpipes made all the difference in the world for me. Mine were straight at the axle until recently. They come out right behind the rear tires now.

Before, everyone knew I was coming home about a block before I was there. Rattling windows, very low vibrating sound. Neighbors hated me. Wasnt really noisy (or so I thought) in cab.

Now, no one even knows Ive left. In cab noise is way less than before. Guess I had gotten used to the way it was. I can have a conversation without shouting now. LOL

Jay, I looked in O'Reilys and I saw some pre bent 90's and 45's and such. Is that what you are referring to? I kinda thought those might work if I could get a section of pipe too.

No, the actual pre bent factory style pipe. Just go to rockauto and look at exhaust for your truck. Click on the info icon, and it will bring up the pictures.

The only thing Rock Auto lists for our trucks is a y-pipe, and they - and every other place I've searched - is out of stock. I would be fine with a stock system, if it was available. Flowmaster makes a 2.5" dual exhaust tailpipe setup for 73-87 C/K that I was looking at, but with my gas tank I don't know how they would adapt. Since 4x4s could be had with or without tailpipes, I have ordered a couple of turn downs to stick on my mufflers, especially since I screwed up when I installed one of them and they're sort of pointing in different directions. Directing the noise away and down is better than nothing.

Just at idle you can hear a bit of a difference. I got sidetracked yesterday so I didn't get to take it for a ride for a more complete before and after.
