Painting Inner Fender/ First wrench day for 2017

So decided to start painting my inner fender wells rear side of radiator support and hood hinges/springs. However, today I only got to paint the fender wells since i had to dissemble the front climb which was quite difficult since ever bolt seemed to be covered in 50 yearold dust/mud. Which also carried to the inner fenders, I spent at least two hours wire wheeling and sanding the surface rust and gunk off the inner fenders. I then washed off the fenders and allowed them to dry and started to apply rustoleum flat black paint seeing how there happened to be two cans laying in the garage just begging for me to use them. I think they turned out pretty good for a spray paint job and look way better then the rust covered pieces of metal they where before but by no means are show room quality. Anyways just thought id share what i did as my first wrench day in 2017 please share what you do to!!!

Wish I took a photo of how rusty and dirty they were before but i didn't think of it at the time. Also Happy new year!

Dawsonthompson,ive been wanting to do the same,i have never done it so does it really take about 2 hrs to remove?im having 2nd thoughts.lol

Lol yea it took quite a while I'm sure there is a better why especially if you had access to a sandblaster but completely worth the effort in my opinion

Great job! I can relate to the effort that went into prepping the inner fenders. I have about 60 hours into mine with all of the damage the previous owner did. I had to weld up a lot of holes, and do a lot of hammer and dolly work (I think this is what pushed me to find an aftermarket tailgate instead of fixing the original).

Yours look much better than mine ha but thanks. What pushed you to tube the front end? and what color is that looks rad would like to see more pics of it!

I broke a few motor mounts in the past, so the forward bars with the front motor plate mount should help limit the twist up front. I went with an early 2000s GM Dark Metallic Green for the paint. My build thread is here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=288712&page=2

vin63- when you say broke motor mounts, are you referring to delaminating the rubber in the mount? If so, you should add a torque limiter to your engine- like a chain to the frame. The engine torque is ripping the mounts apart- I have had that happen before. A torque limiter stopped that. Bracing the front end will not fix that. The inner fenders and fire wall look good, though.

dawsonthompson- nice job. I spent the day going 3 hours away to pick up a transmission for my 66 C30.

We've received 4" of rain in the past 72 hours, the only work we have done is dry off

Sorry for the hijack...no, I used solid motor mounts, and my Pontiac broke the GM conversion frame mounts. A motor plate mount configuration has fixed that.

4 inches dang i thought we got muddy from a 1inch and half you can keep the 4 with you haha

got the rad support torn down and the surface rust knocked off as much as I could waiting for a less windy and warmer day to paint however hoping to spray using gun instead of spray paint any suggestions on a black primer that's easy to deal with and not to pricey?
