Engine temp question. Weird?
1970 c10.
350 engine New to me last week. Ran one at sellers house. 40 degree that day in cleveland This weekend installed Edelbrock 2701 intake HEI DIST edelbrock 600 cfm electric choke Timing set at 14 degrees New 180 Mr gasket high performance thermostat. Running it now in my shop with hose out the door port. Won't warm up enough to open thermostat. Been running a long time! Runs smooth as hell but not to normal temp. Any ideas? Radiator cap is off. Re: Engine temp question. Weird?
So you are saying that even with water not flowing through the rad (T'Stat closed), the engine will not warm up? Sounds like there's a bypass somewhere. Have you put your hands on the rad to see if it is getting warm?

Re: Engine temp question. Weird?
Are you sure the thermostat isn't opening? Does the top radiator hose get hot? Try blocking the air through the radiator and see if it heats up. I have never seen any motor that wouldn't heat up enough to open a thermostat. Maybe the thermostat is stuck in the open position.

brand new 180 thermostat was closed when I installed it.
I have a hand held infer red temp reader Base of thermostat housing 164. Heater hoses and rad hoses warm Gauge on dash may be off. Stayed low What I'm used to seeing after a radiator flush it once it filled back up you top off the radiator then run engine. Once stat opens the antifreeze level drops and you add more fluid. Never happened Who know maybe it was up to temp. I'm guessing not a pump prob as that would cause an overheat. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Engine temp question. Weird?
If the top radiator hose is getting hot the thermostat is open. The temp gauge on these trucks usually about the 1/4 mark.

Re: Engine temp question. Weird?
try a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to raise temp

Re: Engine temp question. Weird?
I don't think you have a problem. If the thermostat didn't open the motor would overheat. Just wait until you drive the truck and see how it does, I'll bet it does fine. 164 at the thermostat housing isn't bad for sitting still. There are a lot of people who wish they could get theirs to run 164.
