Any pavement pounder 4x4s out there?

Just wondering if anyone is regularly driving these K10s and K20s without living somewhere like the Rockies and having the hub's locked all the time. Anyone use em as daily drivers without often needing the 4x4 capability?

I do, but not in the winter once the salt hits the road. I wish I lived where that didn't happen.

Re: Any pavement pounder 4x4s out there?

My K20 was my DD for 32 years until I retired in 2009. Now it just sees occasional use. Cross country (once, in winter), hunting, fishing, woodcutting, trash hauling, building materials, pretty much used it for everything. I don't need 4WD all the time, but often enough to make it indispensable.

I daily my K10 SWB and my friend daily drives the K10 Burb. Only time the hubs are locked in is when it snows or if we are wheeling. We put 25K miles on a K20 3 years ago with no issues at all. The burb has pushing 10K miles in almost 2 years.

My truck is my daily for the most part. I don't usually drive it when its icy out though, mostly because its a little on the sketchy side and its got an open diff.

Re: Any pavement pounder 4x4s out there?

I don't drive mine as daily drivers, but they do get driven, rarely in 4 wheel drive. I think most k's aren't driven in 4x4 much. Look how many 4x4s are out there. Most are bought for the cool factor. And if restored, it will be babied(too much money has been invested)
My unrestored k20 is meant to be beat off road. And still On desert roads it spends little time in 4wd

My K10 is my DD. The hubs get locked a couple times a year for snows or the odd field job (like when I pulled a building across the a corner of our property to relocate it).

Re: Any pavement pounder 4x4s out there?

Mine is in my shop right now, but normally I drive it all the time. I only lock in the hubs if I'm going off-road or if snow is likely. That way I just have to shift into 4WD without getting out in sloppy conditions to lock the hubs.

During the summer I'll occasionally lock and unlock the hubs just to make sure they keep moving easily.

Re: Any pavement pounder 4x4s out there?

These are great 4x4s to daily drive. You can disengage the transfer and unlock the hubs. So your not powering shafts needlessly. You do have the extra weight, but I see the live axle as a safety plus. You have leafs in the front and it will drive like a truck. So, if you like driving a truck you will love your 4x4. I lock my hubs occasionally in 2wd to keep the juices flowing in the joints and such.

My K20 gets driven regularly but usually only once a year in 4WD to go elk hunting.

Re: Any pavement pounder 4x4s out there?

My truck is not a daily driver but it does get driven year round. Just not on the road this time of year due to road salt.

I'm locked in 4wd now and will be until some time in March. I put the chains on the front tires this past weekend. They are there until March as well.

This is mostly what it looks like now. In fact I pushed quite a bit of snow just last night.

My '72 K2500 daily drives the extreme terrain that is I-101 in the SF Bay. Been my way to work since I got it two years ago. 30-40 mile round trip daily.

Great truck Flounder!
I drive mine 'daily' when I need a vehicle. Some days I spend all day in the shop here so don't need to drive to 'work'. 6000 miles in the last (first) twelve months. Propane going in as we speak. Rarely in 4X4 but great to have!

This is a cool thread. I put around in mine a 3-4 times a week. I've got a company truck that gets daily duties.

Not a GM, but a '69. I drove this from Maryland to Florida and back once, several trips to Cape Hatteras, NC and back, Maryland to Maine and back, and the big one was Maryland to Flagstaff and eventually back to Maryland. Big arse bias ply tires, manual steering, manual brakes, no A/C, no cup holders. Enjoyed every inch of those hiway runs. These old 4wds roll right on down the hiway with the rest.
