My New Aquisition 72 Super Cheyenne

When I was talking to the owner he kept calling it a Super Cheyenne and I was thinking that it's not because it doesn't have much trim at all. Come to find out the holes for the trim are there they just bondo'd over them.

It's a 402/400 with A/C, PS and PB disc. It's fairly solid with the exception of rockers, cab corners and under the battery. It has a wood bed that is almost gone.

I've enjoyed working on it so far. Drive train is good but PS,PB and A/C don't work right now but those are easy. I'm gonna try my had and rust repair.

Any tips or suggestions are welcomed.

Congrats on the find. I'm seeing quite a few here in Texas, but it's easy to still be 300 miles from the truck. The pics look great. Are you planning on welding in the rockers and patching the cab? From the few I've looked at so far it seems I'll be having to do this.

Your comment on AC being easy caught me. Most ads I've seen that mention having AC are mostly non working which made me think it's not worth fixing. I'll be interested to hear what you find out about the system.

And I didn't realize this late a model had wood beds. I've just started looking so I'm not very familiar with this gen Chevy yet. What are you plans on handling the replacement bed?

I am planning on welding in the patch panels myself. First time but I'm sure I can do it. I just have to be patient.

To me A/C's are simple. I see it as coming down to a compressor and leaks and maybe plugged but I haven't ran across that yet. Gotta have A/C in Texas.

I'm going to buy the strips and cut and groove the wood myself. I need to read about the process before I tackle it.

Yep. I'd be a lot easier putting the trim back on.

My truck didn't have the trim, but it will have at least the lower belt and rear moldings. However the replacement bed had some or all moldings. Couldn't tell you what exactly, because it's not here, but the rear holes were welded. Have never drilled into a weld myself, but seems if you use the right tools and process it's done cleanly. Perhaps a center punch?, step bit, wax and high speed hvac drill is in order. At some point body/paint guy and myself will do it.

Years ago a kid here in town removed the trim from a hugger/white Cheyenne super and filled the holes. He painted the truck solid red. I still see it around once in awhile.

Unfortunately the SPID is gone. I believed him that it's a super because of all the bondo oozing through the trim holes I noticed like in the cab and fenders. I haven't checked for all the holes yet. He also told me that only the super was available with all the options this truck has but I'm not sure because I'm still learning these trucks.

looks like a good truck to start with. all Cheyenne supers I have seen had woodgrain on dash ,glovebox, and door panels.

Does it have a headliner ?? Looks like a custom deluxe to me which is still cool.

Super will have a cargo light, does your have one?

Bottom line - if it has YE9 on the SPID, it's a Super. That appears to be outfitted as a Custom Deluxe only, but all the above questions are pertinent. All that matters for records is the SPID or Build Sheet though. If it's original and says YE9, then someone has gone to the trouble to retrofit Custom Deluxe door panels and remove all the woodgrain etc for some reason. Sorry, not what you were hoping to hear I'm sure.

EDIT: OOPS! Sorry, missed the post above the interior pics. No SPID, copy. Look for a build sheet under the seat. If not present, you have to assume you have a Custom Deluxe.
Super should have the following:
Headliner (so would Cheyenne, not just a super)
Woodgrain moldings all the way around the outside, incl tailgate (edit: Cheyenne and super)
woodgrain instrument bezel, gb door, and door panels (panels common with Cheyenne, not just a super)
Bright slip on tailgate handle cover (super only - and all chrome in 71)
houndstooth seat cover (but these are often missing - super only)
Cargo light (common to Cheyenne level, not just a super)

Looking at the comments, it sounds like its a Custom Deluxe. I wasn't counting on it being a Super but that would have been nice.

It does have a cargo light but no headliner.

One thing in 1971 and 72 wood bed is really not a up grade its a down grade.From what i've found out 1971-72 mostly all had metal beds.So i be checking to see if the bed was swapped at some point.This is a 1971 Cheyenne mine has the headliner it has the factory rear slider all the trim package AC power steering power brake.Its a Black on Black truck witch are hard to find 350/350 paid 650.00 back in 2008 when most of you where losing your houses.Could of bought 2 camaro's fro $10,000 a 1969 Rs and a 1968 plain modal camaro's.But did not have that kinda money

Metal bed is standard, wood bed is an option, so it makes sense to see more metal beds floating around out there. Not an up or downgrade, just an option that many chose for whatever reason - was popular with the camper crowd. Slider, a/c, ps, pb have nothing to do with trim level - could be ordered on a plain Jane as an RPO. LOVE your black Cheyenne, nice lookin truck and I agree a desirable paint/trim combo. Looks very original. Got a SPID you can share?

I wouldn't worry too much of it being a Cheyenne Super or not....that option is mostly a couple of emblems and nothing too unique or anything that a couple of hundred bucks worth of parts can't equal.
A lot of the standard 'super' options ended up ordered on other mid-range trucks and also a lot of cheyenne super's are actually pretty stripped compared to some others.
I sold my previous '72 Cheyenne Super in order to get my current Highlander...and they are pretty much identically equipped except I find the highlander a bit more unique.

there's a decent one in pasadena, but it's a lwb, i want a swb. so far the 2 i found that i like are up in dallas.

A/C, Tilt and A/T and PS could have been a Highlander. Without a SPID I guess there is no way of knowing. Have the door panels been painted black? The parchment seat and black door panels don't go together.

If the panels or the seat are original to the truck, not a highlander. But on the chance the seat hasn't been replaced, it is definitely worth checking the panels for black paint over old parchment. Sorry if I missed it, but have you peeked under the seat for a build sheet?

LOL And a few I'd like to have a look at are around Houston and Victoria. Luckily I'm open to both short or long fleetside. That opens up a lot more options.

I found it in north Houston. I prefer the short bed as well.

It does look like the door panels have been painted black. They're white underneath.

I haven't looked under the seat yet but would be surprised if it's there. There's an amp and two 10"s under there.

So the 402 was an option?
