84 4x4 parking brake adjustment

First off, i tried to search but my dang phone wont work, it doesnt give me anywhere to type a query.

I replaced the parking brake system front to back on my sons 84. Now i need to adjust it. As far as i can see the only adjustment is the passenger side cable where it attaches to the equilizer. When i apply the parking brake the driver side cable pulls tight in the frame grommet. Something just doesnt seem right?? Is that how it works?

I'm going to assume that your 84 is no different than my 78. I have long bed 4x4 and there are 4 cables.

Cable 1 is the front cable that runs from the parking brake pedal in the cab and has the adjuster screw on the far end where it attaches to the equalizer.

Cable 2 is the intermediate cable that connects the front cable and the two rear cables @ the drums. At the front cable the intermediate is wrapped thru the equalizer. On the driver's side it runs almost straight back along the frame rail and thru a steel rod eyelet that is placed in a hole in the frame. The passenger side runs across to the other side of the frame, thru a steel rod eyelet attached to the transmission cross member (on my 4x4) near the mid-line of the truck, continues to the rear and thru another steel rod eyelet along the passenger side frame rail to the rear cable @ the drum.

Cables 3 & 4 are the individual cables at the drum and clip to the ends of the intermediate cable with a double keyhole c shaped clip.

Your drums have to be adjusted properly before attempting to adjust your parking brake. If they are not then they will hold differently and may drag while driving.

With all the cables connected and the equalizer nut loose or all the way out, push down on your parking brake pedal 4 clicks from the fully released position. Tighten the equalizer nut until there is moderate drag felt when the rear wheels are rotated forward. Both rear wheels should have close the same drag if your drums are adjusted properly. Release the parking brake and rotate the rear wheels forward - there should be no noticeable drag. You're all done.

Thank you for the reply. I am pretty sure that they changed in 83. I have 3 cables. One from the pedal to the equalizer and one to each wheel. The one that seems tricky is the drivers side.

Thanks for the suggestion Jim, but that was the first thing i did before i posted the question here. The thing that i can't figure out is how the drivers side cable is supposed to act when the parking brake is activated. I just don't think it seems right
