Part from steering column

I took this part out of the steering column tube a while back when I pulled it apart for paint and rebuild but can't remember how/whereabouts it sat in the steering tube. It's not on any schematics so I'm guess it wasn't supposed to be removed. Not sure what purpose it serves either. Maybe prevents the outer tube from collapsing when you tighten the upper dash mount?

Anyways, if anybody can confirm where this sits in the tube I'd appreciate it.

dummy shift tube for floor shift only . It pushes into the top of the column.

Okay thanks man, so not too important how far into the tube? It just keeps the shaft in place?

Re: Part from steering column

it will only go in so far. it holds the floor shift bowl in place. I`ll try to get a picture tomorrow. the column on your work bench looks like it has a shift tube in it . a floor shift column doesn`t have a shift tube , only this dummy piece.

Re: Part from steering column

Thanks, a picture of the floor shift bowl would be helpful so I'd at least know what it's there for. This column is a factory floor shift column.

Re: Part from steering column

Here you are. It has to go under / behind the piece that adjusts tension on the bowl The 2nd pic shows it in place.
