door lock question
69 chevy longbed. the passenger side door lock will not lock with door shut. If i open the door the lock will work perfectly. tried loosening the latch catch that is bolted to the cab but there is no adjustment there. any ideas what the problem could be?

On my '72, I have to push the door in to get my pass side to lock. You might try that & see if it works. I haven't tried to figure out how to adjust it.

I would mark around it with a fine felt tip pen before moving it so you can put it back in the original position if you need to.... Try moving it out about 1/16th of an inch to start with. Don't let it drop down any. If it was the drivers side I would suspect a worn latch but not so much on the passengers side. LockDoc

Thanks LockDoc. I tried again this morning, loosed all the bolts and only got it to move maybe 1/16th of an inch but enough to get it locked with some effort. From what I can see the striker plate bolt holes are virtually the same size as the bolts, so not sure how it can move very much. Am I missing something?

Yessir. It moves about 1/4" up/down and in/out. It takes some fine adjustments to get it latching smoothly. You can put a dab of white grease on the contact points of the latch to help see where it might be too high or too low. You don't want the door to drag on the latch.

On my 70 / 1 Ton, the passenger side would not lock from outside with key and was hard to set to lock from inside, pushing down on lock knob. The issue was the "rod" connecting the upper lock knob to door latch assembly, which can be set to lock with the door key switch was slightly bent. It was hanging up on the edge of the door latch assembly. A few minor adjustments to "rod" and its worked fine since.
