Re: 454 question

Of course!!
You might need to beef it up a bit if you're hard on the loud pedal though!

Re: 454 question

My brother ran a TH350 in a 468-powered Chevelle that ran in the 10s, so they can be built to handle a lot. Not out of the box though.

When he went to a 598 he stepped up to a built TH400, but the TH350 can obviously take a lot when properly prep'd.

I owned a 72 chevele with a built 454 , 650 foot pounds of torque , with a built turbo 350 , and quality converter behind it , it ran 11's , so it can be done .

Re: 454 question

What are you going to do with it? are you just going to drive it or Hot Rod it?My understanding is the 350 has a 2 piece shaft and the collar is the weak link.

Re: 454 question

Put a power glide in it , if your engine is all that it only needs to shift once .

I don't think that is quite enough.

Re: 454 question

The mind set of the drag racer.. is the reason some put a th350 behind a big block..
There is a reason gm did not.. Sure you can build the living crap out od a th350 and make it last behind the big block.. and empty your wallet doing it..
Drag racers do it. as the parts spinning are lighter.. than the th400..
Also the reason many still run a powerglide..
In a truck.. why spend the huge coin to build a th350 correctly to live a long and happy life behind a stout big block. when a basic rebuilt th400 will..
If MPH and E.T's are your goal, then sure. pull out your wallet and spend the dough on the th350 hard parts so it'll live.. Sorry. a few upgraded clutches and steels isn't enough.. no matter what your told.. if you plan on getting on that 454.. if you are just gonna cruise.. and never use the bb ft lb in anger.. then sure.. enjoy..

Many with the bb /th350 combo.. don't beat on them much. a few times in it's life at a drag strip on street tires is not beating on it.. nor is hot dogging around town on street tires and dirty streets..
Again ask why the bean counters didn't put the th350 behind a big block.. it's not like it wasn't a bolt in.. cheaper part.. And this was when warranties were very short..
24-36k miles. if that.. and they were not that bold..

I agree with this philosophy , but remember most 454s were gutless wonders with around 200 horsepower , a built 454 is totally different animal than a motor home or ss454 truck engine , and a built 350 is a different transmission than a stocker . Im sure the guy who built mine , got the car with the transmission , spent well north of 3 grand on it .

Re: 454 question

I had a '67 K/10 Suburban that the PO had put a 454/TH350 into. Problems were
1] it was an epic gas guzzler [6 city -- 8 highway];
2] the tranny was no good for downshifting/engine braking [it would just upshift on its own],
3] the tranny pan leaked excessively, especially after a day in the mountains.

Transmissions don't care about the hp(persay).. it's the ft lb loading.. twisting.. even the smogged truck 454 had ft lb to spare

Re: 454 question

TH350 behind a mild big block on the street will work just fine. Obviously the TH400 would be a stronger alternative, but it also takes more HP to turn.
